I don’t think it did a bad job, it’s all very interesting. However, I am hopefully not out of a job because it does lack some personality. Have a read and decide for yourself… As the winter weather fades away and the first signs of spring emerge, April is a month of new beginnings and fresh starts in Congleton. With the arrival of longer days and milder temperatures, people are filled with a renewed sense of energy and excitement for the season ahead. For many, April marks the start of the outdoor events season. From Easter fairs and garden shows to sporting events and music festivals, there are countless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors and get involved in local community activities. April is also the month when the UK celebrates National Gardening Week, encouraging people to get their hands dirty and embrace the joys of gardening. For businesses, April is a key time to promote products and services to consumers who are in the mood to spend and engage with the community. One effective way to reach potential customers is through print advertising in Beartown Voice. Our magazines allow businesses to target specific geographic areas and demographics, and it has been proven to be a powerful way to build brand awareness, drive sales, and create a sense of trust and credibility among consumers.Research has shown that print advertising can have a significant impact on consumer behaviour, with studies indicating that people are more likely to remember information presented in print ads compared to digital ads. Print advertising also provides a tangible and lasting connection with consumers, as Beartown Voice is often kept and referred to multiple times. In summary, April is a month of new beginnings and community engagement, making it an ideal time for businesses to reach out to consumers through print advertising in Beartown Voice.Ka xTDH.CHESHIRETHE DESIGN HOUSE BY INTERIOR MOTIVESHELLO@TDHOUSE.CO.UK01477 533961FULL / PARTIAL INTERIOR DESIGN SCHEMESDESIGN CONSULTATIONSMADE TO ORDER CURTAINS AND BLINDSWALLPAPERSOFT FURNISHINGUPHOLSTERYLIGHTINGFURNITUREHOME ACCESSORIESVisit our showroom Monday to Friday 9.30am - 5.00pm Saturday 10am - 3pmA7 MANOR POINT BUSINESS PARK, MANOR LANE, HOLMES CHAPEL CW4 8GLOUR NEW WEBSITE IS COMING SOON Love paper, please recycle after reading

8Help with heel painPLANTAR fasciitis is a condition, but thanks to Dr Google it has become an umbrella term for all types of heel pain. The name means inflammation of the plantar fascia, a structure that runs under the foot from the heel to the toes. The Symptoms include:• Feels like something under the foot wants to snap.• Pain anywhere along the plantar fascia though usually in the heel.• Pain worse 1st thing in the morning or after a period of rest.• The day after a lot of exercise can be particularly painful.• Its ok when walking the dog or playing golf but after a brew or pint it feels painful. There’s rarely a single cause, and it’s almost impossible to predict who will get it. However, the following factors are associated:• High impact forces from walking on hard surfaces or wearing safety boots or shoes with little to no cushioning.• Stiff ankles.• Reduced fat pad under the heel and standing for long periods.• Increasing exercise without allowing enough time for tissues in the body to adapt or running with a heavy heel strike.• Body weight. Low body weight can reduce fat pads. Being overweight increases forces on the feet especially when walking and running where forces are amplified. What about treatment? Treatment should aim to make the body stronger and more capable. This means exercise!!Exercise helps to reduce pain and stimulates injured tissues to become stronger. As they gain strength, they become more resistant to stress, and therefore less prone to injury.Short term treatments do not stimulate tissue to strengthen but help to relieve pain and make exercising more bearable. They may include taping the foot, massage and rolling, stretching, heel cushions.Medium Term. Once pain is more bearable, we shift the focus of rehab on to building strength. Treatment will vary depending on the person. An 80-year-old lady with joint replacements would have a completely different rehab plan to a 25 year old marathon runner.Medium term treatments include strength exercise, foot orthosis, gait retraining and addressing lifestyle issues such as sleep and diet which both have a huge effect on pain and bodyweight.Long term we continue building strength and resilience to prevent recurrence. Exercises build on whole body strength rather than focusing on the foot & ankle. The need for orthotic use can be reduced.Anna & Andrew AyresAyres Health

1212It’s your funeral...IF you turn on daytime TV, you cannot escape a constant barrage of advertisements from various companies selling the concept of a direct cremation and the wonderful things you can do with the money you may have saved on a tradition funeral. On the other hand, there are also plenty of funeral directors who don’t want you or your family to have a direct cremation, arguing that it is impersonal and unfitting as a way to mourn a loved one. The fact of the matter is that funerals, even direct cremations are expensive events. So which route do you go down, the traditional funeral with a full service. Or a direct cremation with no service? Which is better?Well the simple answer to this, is that it is your choice. And that’s the beauty of being able to offer both types of service. We have offered both direct and traditional services since we opened our doors in 2020, as we believe that our clients should have access to every choice that suits their needs. In our experience the financial factor doesn’t really make a difference. People don’t choose a direct cremation because it costs less. They choose it because that is what the person whose funeral it actually is, wanted it.To date we have arranged around 35 direct cremations for people, and we have many clients who have booked direct cremation funeral plans for their own needs when their time comes. The advantage of using our local service, is that it is exactly that. A local service, provided by our respectable local family. The companies advertising on TV are mostly based in the south of England, so that means that a person has to be transferred almost 300 miles to be cremated. That’s certainly something we wouldn’t want for our loved ones. We don’t believe a person should be treated like an Amazon package and shipped up and down the motorway! There is also another aspect of a direct cremation that people tend to dismiss and sometimes overlook and that is the celebration of a life. Last year we helped a lady who had chosen a direct cremation before she passed. Her family then organised an amazing tribute to her life at Congleton Town Hall, which was arranged and overseen by our fantastic celebrant Jill Young. It was a perfect send off and tribute to a very popular lady. A direct cremation, doesn’t have to be cold and impersonal.Direct cremations certainly have their place in today’s changing society. The misconception that they are somehow insensitive or inappropriate is exactly that, a misconception. They are a perfect choice, if that is what a family feel is appropriate.Larvin & Clegg Funeral Care

16Dementia support by AblewellI first experienced the impact of dementia, when my Nanna was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. I was about 13 at the time and I didn’t really know how to make things easier for her, but I knew I wanted to. It was upsetting to see the impact on my Grandad, and I know more so now, how difficult life must have been for both of them, to live with Dementia. I am certain that this experience ignited my passion to care, and to make a difference to people.By the time she passed away, I had started to work in care, and 20 years on I continue to do so. I am now using my experience to reach out to people and improve the lives of those living with dementia. We have recently trained all staff to an advanced level in dementia. This has included practical and interactive training, where each of us experienced the physical reality of what happens to the body and senses when living with dementia, and the impact that staff can have on how they feel.Following the practical training, there has been extensive knowledge training provided by the Alzheimer’s Society. Staff at all levels throughout the business have completed between 3 and 6 courses, depending on their role. The training above and beyond minimum requirements, guarantees that whatever stage of this disease somebody may be experiencing, all of our Carers will have the skills to support them as well as an understanding of how they may feel.Staff are now equipped to observe signs and symptoms that may need to be explored, to enable early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. We know that this is important in slowing progression, and can help people to plan ahead, and make advance decisions about their care and treatment. We know that keeping someone in their own home, for as long as possible, is an effective way to promote their independence, and empower them to make choices about how they live. Completing the advanced training, has provided us with the skills to encourage this, by creating safe environments with appropriate support in place. We also know the important role that family carers play in keeping people in their own home, and the part that we play in removing some of the pressure that can be associated with this. Every family is different, so the first step is always an informal chat to get to know them, and how they are being affected by dementia. This way, we can work together to find a solution that is going to be effective. Sometimes this is a care package, or it could be support for the family carer that allows them to carry on.Rachael BeardAblewell CareChampioning your independence

26Congleton’s heritage...WINDOWS? No, not screen-based, but ones you look through. Or in this case at. Bringing in light and fresh air… keeping out cold, wet or draught, they’re ‘clearly’ useful. Unless they are false versions, of course. But heritage? Yes. Easy-to-spot these everyday objects make a surprisingly good subject for local history-hunting. What are some of the things to seek out?Congleton has an abundance of sash windows in its older buildings. Typically Georgian/Victorian and neatly long and rectangular the glazing slides upwards. Yet once these essentials were seen as ‘clearly useful’ in another way. The larger the house and therefore the wealthier the owners, usually the more windows. Governments reasoned that this represented a handy and fair source of taxation. So, during the period of around 1700-1850 the infamous Window Tax was levied, or as it was then put ‘…Laying a duty on windows or lights…’.How did this alter the urban fabric? One solution to lower tax burdens was infill of window spaces with matching brickwork. Many of these remain today on upper storeys. Beware though because ‘blind’ windows can be deceptive. Sometimes they were filled in to convert the space into a storeroom perhaps. Occasionally the bricked-up look was deliberately built in to look old or pleasingly symmetrical! That wasn’t all. An additional excise on glass itself was applied for around a hundred years from the mid-18th to mid-19th century further making windows an expensive luxury. The effect of these unpopular decrees was that some rooms (and people) were denied precious light and inlets of fresh air… neither healthy nor desirable. The well-known expression ‘daylight robbery’ seems to match this state of affairs. Yet as the term didn’t appear in print until much later this could be unconnected. Even then it simply meant theft taking place without cover of darkness.Other window types are casements, hinged from the side and opening outward, often small and seen on earlier, half-timbered properties. Look out too in this textile town for weavers’ windows on upper storeys of domestic dwellings - distinctively wide and designed to admit maximum light for craftspeople. And the word ‘window’ itself? Its origin is in the Old Norse language of Scandinavia. ‘Vindauga’ sounds quite poetic, translating to ‘eye of the wind’. Now a final fling, coming this time from Latin, a word even exists for the unfortunate act of being thrown out of one – defenestration. Certainly couldn’t happen with the bricked-up variety.Curious connections to reflect on. Spring gives us welcome longer days to appreciate windows’ benefits… and backstories.Julie Elizabeth Smalley

Hug your way to better health...HAVE you noticed that hugs are back? The long years of the Covid pandemic had a huge detrimental effect on the unwitting hug. The friendly greeting and fond farewell and even comfort in times of sadness; they disappeared like magic smoke on that fateful day in March 2020. But the hugs can no longer be supressed; they are fighting back from the darkness! Very sporadically at first and I admit, it felt very weird when a friend hugged me after so long. My brain, so used to the 2 metres of space, was momentarily scrambled! And then…. Yes! Away with the ‘new normal,’ this was actually NORMAL – I hugged back. Our sense of touch allows us to physically process our place within the environment around us and helps us to communicate and maintain social bonds with others. Humans have been hugging each other since there have been humans and probably before that in whatever apish form we were back then. Hugs convey emotions of happiness, sadness, excitement and are universally comforting. Science now proves that hugging makes us happier and healthier too. By giving someone a hug, the brain and body are stimulated into releasing a cocktail of ‘feel good’ hormones.Oxytocin is the love hormone which relieves stress and boosts heart health by lowering the heart rate and blood pressure. It creates a feeling of comfort.Serotonin is a natural antidepressant, lifting your mood and calming feelings of anxiety.Dopamine is part of your reward system giving a sense of pleasure and motivation. 4 ways that hugging can improve your health1. Reduces stress – A hug conveys your support for someone going through a tough time. It has a calming effect as the hormones released help to decrease the levels of cortisol (stress hormone). The heart rate slows and the muscles relax, relieving tension in the body.2. Improves sleep – The calming effects from a cuddle before you go to sleep will relax the body and mind and help you get a good night’s sleep.3. Boosts your immunity – One study has shown that people who were hugged regularly felt more supported socially and were less susceptible to infections and experienced less severe symptoms. Hugging creates a reduction in stress, depression and poor sleep which can lead to a weakened immune system.4. Increases well-being – Hugging makes us happier, instantly healing negative emotions. It bonds us together, strengthening trust and making us feel safe and supported. A hug when we are feeling down can lighten our mood and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.A hug is such a simple act that we can all do and yet it is so very powerful for our mental and physical health. Why not give a hug to someone you love today!.Jan Johnson Reflexology28

30Easing the seasonal sneeze...SPRING is here and for most its’ return is welcomed with open arms. Glorious displays of daffodils and crocus adorn roadsides and gardens, new born lambs playfully leap and trees start to bud with their canopy of green slowly unfurling. The energy of spring is joyous and uplifting. A season of inspiration and new beginnings. That said, this long awaited and celebrated seasonal transition isn’t always welcomed by all! In fact, a large percentage of the population will anticipate its’ return with trepidation. Why? Because spring also heralds ‘allergy’ season. As nature reawakens, trees begin to bud and enter a period of regrowth. They also release ‘pollen’ into the air, that is carried by the wind to other plants to fertilize them. Inside these pollen grains are proteins that commonly trigger an allergic reaction in people. A reaction commonly recognised as Hay fever or Allergic Rhinitis. Sneezing, dry throat, nasal congestion and itchy eyes presenting as the most common symptoms and can appear as early as January and February when trees begin their pollen release and then surge during Spring and Summer as the variety of pollen releasing plants increases. Trees, flowering plants and grasses all become offending culprits that can cause the hay fever sufferer so much misery. The severity of symptoms varies from person to person but for some, symptoms can be so severe that it can mean staying behind closed doors (and windows) to avoid encountering the offending pollen spores! So, how can we best manage these symptoms so they don’t hinder daily life? Many people opt for conventional over the counter remedies such as anti-histamines or your GP may prescribe steroid medications to counter the inflammation caused by the bodies’ allergic reaction. However, both types of medication are associated with side effects such as drowsiness and nausea to hypertension. The good news is that it is possible to manage and reduce the severity of many of the associated symptoms with nutrition and lifestyle interventions.Anti-histamines are one of the most common remedies and work by preventing histamine from binding to our cells and eliciting a response, but as mentioned earlier they can have unwanted side effects. Natural remedies on the other hand tend to have less side effects. Vitamin C is just one example which can reduce blood histamine levels without additional side effects. A study demonstrated that 2000mg of Vitamin C per day for 2 weeks reduced blood histamine concentrations by 30-40% in adult participants thus reducing hay fever symptoms.Other remedies such as Black Seed Oil have been shown to reduce nasal congestion, runny, itchy nose, and sneezing. A double blind study on patients with allergic rhinitis found that taking just 0.5ml of black seed oil over 30 days offered significant improvement. Stinging nettles are also worthy of consideration. Renowned as a source of pain and inflammation due to their ‘sting’ when our skin contacts this prolific wayside plant it is interesting to learn that nettles contain specific compounds that actually ‘lessen’ inflammation and reduce the histamine produced in response to an allergen. Furthermore, once processed into a supplement, dried, freeze dried or cooked, stinging nettle can be safely consumed without its infamous ‘bite’. The wonders of nature at its’ very best!Other noteworthy remedies known for their anti-inflammatory properties are bromelain (the protein digesting enzyme found in pineapple) which may be useful for swelling in the nose and sinuses, Quercetin, a bioflavanoid naturally occurring in foods such as onions, apples, honey and green leafy vegetables not only boasts anti inflammatory properties but also has anti histamine and anti oxidant properties and Pine bark extract a rich source of plant flavonoids and shown to directly block histamine release. 32Let’s talk legal...AS a child abduction lawyer, I am often asked if parental child abduction occurs in Cheshire. You would be surprised at how frequently it happens and how easy it is to fall foul of the laws on parental child abduction if you are a separated or divorced parent. What is parental child abduction?Parental child abduction involves a parent taking their child out of the UK without the agreement of the other parent or a court order. If you want to move overseas with your child after your separation or divorce then you’ll need the other parent’s agreement or court order. In most cases, you’ll need the agreement of the other parent or a court order to even take your child on holiday abroad. As the definition of what amounts to parental child abduction is broad it is best to take legal advice if you aren’t sure if you need permission to take a child overseas to live or for a holiday or if you need help with how to go about securing an agreement or an order.Stopping parental child abduction - Some parents fear their child will be taken abroad to live or won’t return to the UK after a family holiday. That may be because an ex has talked about living in Australia, for example, or because your ex has extended family overseas and you are worried about child abduction because of newspaper stories. There are ways in which you can stop child abduction, or at least reduce the risk, of it happening to your family. One option is to apply to the court for a prohibited steps order.Relocating overseas or taking children abroad on holiday - Do it by the book is the best advice a child abduction lawyer can give if you want to move overseas with your children or take them abroad on holiday. That way you can’t be accused of parental child abduction or experience the embarrassment and disruption of having your travel plans kiboshed when you are about to board the plane, or being ordered to return by a foreign court.Relocation orders and holiday orders are only necessary if the other parent doesn’t agree with your plans. Speaking to a family lawyer before you talk to your ex can be helpful so you know your rights and how best to communicate your plans to get what you want. For example, there may not be a strong objection if your planned move overseas is a secondment and you can show you have thought about how contact with the other parent will work whilst you are overseas. The team at Sanctuary Tax & Trust explain how many families nd themselves victims of avoidable losses and why simply writing a will does not guarantee our family will inherit as we wish. For the vast majority of people, we spend all our lives working to build up wealth, through property, savings and pensions we look at providing nancial security for our families and when our nal day arrives, we hope these assets will pass to the people we care about the most, partners, children, relatives and friends. Traditionally, people have chosen wills to document their wishes and while writing a will is important, it does not provide any protection for the assets within it.Considerations when planning InheritanceCare Fees – As we live longer the likelihood of needing care becomes greater and under the government’s changes to the social care act should the need for care arise, we could see our asset taken down to just £14,250. The new assessment process will see everybody with property and savings over a combined value of £23,250 being required to pay for their care.Relationship Failure – When passing assets purely through a will we see many leaving their assets to their children but not giving consideration to what would happen if one of their children was to divorce. This can lead to a child seeing half of their inheritance in the hands of an ex-partner and in the event of early bereavement this can lead to grandchildren being disinherited.Inheritance Tax – The current IHT framework can be complex and unknowingly people can leave their children and even grandchildren with an Inheritance tax issue.Probate – The cost of probate as risen dramatically over the last few years, and it can be a lengthy and drawn-out process. On average, with a valid Will, probate will typically take 6 – 12 months to complete, without a Will it may can take up to 2 years. Its Never the Wrong Time To Do The Right Thing – While people appreciate that inheritance planning is important many will delay seeking the correct advice. By putting o arranging our aairs we run the risk of running out of time, or in the event o illness, seeing our options dramatically reduced. Why Sanctuary Tax & Trust Services? With over 20 years of experience in Estate and Inheritance planning we have helped families in the area protect their assets and plan their inheritance in the most cost-eective way. While the individual family’s circumstance may vary, the one constant is that each family aims to provide the maximum amount of inheritance possible without the stress of complexed legal jargon.

40Days Out & Meals Out...WITH the weather still being a little wet and cold, an indoor activity is perfect for this time of year. While soft play centres have their uses, sometimes you want something more challenge both physically and mentally. On my search for this I came across Audley Climbing Centre. We booked a Saturday afternoon slot for myself and my two daughters, aged 8 and 11, at Audley Climbing Centre. As it was our first time at the centre we were advised to book an instructed session. This is great for beginners and perfect if you are in a group of like minded friends or family wanting to learn to climb together. The first person is £20 for an hour and then each additional person is £10.We arrived early for our session and while we waited I filled in the consent forms online. Once that was done the instructor got us to remove any loose clothing and jewellery, then talked through some safety points. We got our harnesses on and were taken to the first wall. Having an instructed led session means the instructor will set the climbing to each participant’s ability so all ages and abilities will be encouraged to climb at a level that suits them. Our instructor was great, she was fun and encouraging, with hints and tips of how to climb the walls. When the walls got trickier she suggested ways of manoeuvring yourself higher. At Audley Climbing Centre they use a belaying system which is the act of exerting tension on a climbing rope to counterbalance the climber when they fall. The instructor is your partner when climbing so is always at the other end of your rope. When you were ready to come down, you held on to the rope with both hands, lent back and walked down while she took your weight. She made you feel safe and personally filled me with confidence when she was working with both my daughters and myself while we climbed. The staff didn’t rush you through your session and we finished on a great activity. One of the walls leads you to a large structural beam which is part of the building. If you made it to the top of the wall you could go and stand on the beam and do a dance. My eldest daughter achieved this and quite happily did the floss while standing on a beam 8 meters high. Climbing is great for physical fitness but also great for building confidence and self-esteem. We all left that day feeling like we had achieved more than we thought we could and definitely wanting to come back and have another go. If you enjoy your session you can complete a 6 week climbing course which can also work towards your NICAS qualification. Also Easter Holiday climbing sessions are bookable now. 44Things Are About to Get WeirdCAN’T get enough of true crime? Love the twists and turns found in the likes of Happy Valley, but wonder whether anything that wild ever happens in real life? Find yourself getting drawn into those ‘unsolved mystery’ programmes whilst channel-hopping? If I’ve piqued your interest, allow me to introduce myself (and my podcast!).I’m Chyaz Samuel, and after moving back to Cheshire last year following a decade in Manchester city centre, I decided to launch the podcast I’d been dreaming about creating: Things Are About To Get Weird. I’ve had a lifelong fascination with strange-but-true stories, and would devour books about bizarre events and extraordinary people from a young age. As a television newsreader for Channel 7’s ‘That’s Manchester’, I was always drawn to items that were a little out of the ordinary, and knew I’d love to share stories like these through a project of my own one day too. Finally, inspired by the boom in both podcasts and the true crime genre, I took the plunge last September and released the first three episodes of Things Are About To Get Weird. Within the first week of launch, the podcast hit No.27 on the Spotify True Crime Charts; before long I found myself appearing on the Apple Podcasts Charts amongst names like Kim Kardashian and Laura Whitmore, who also have true crime shows. I’m now approaching my 30th episode, and have grown a following of wonderful fellow strange story enthusiasts! The episodes are all around 30 minutes long, and if you’ve not yet ventured into the world of podcasts here’s the best way to think of mine: imagine the episodes as half-hour radio features that you can catch up on any time, with each one covering a different fascinating story. Things Are About To Get Weird can be found on all podcast players, with Apple Podcasts and Spotify being two of the most popular! If you decide to start at Episode 1, the story may ring a bell as it took place just down motorway near to Keele Services. It’s the tale of Ursula and Sabina Eriksson, the twins who caused havoc on the M6 back in 2008 – it’s a truly shocking case, and gets stranger with every passing moment. But with each story being self-contained, you can dip in to any episode which takes your fancy! Plus, if you enjoy the occasional venture into the paranormal, there’s the odd spooky incident featured from time to time too.If the podcast sounds like your cup of tea, just scan the QR code with your phone’s camera to find links to the podcast on various players. I hope you enjoy the stories! Chyaz Samuel Things Are About To Get Weird
