The stream weaves through the trees with so many small waterfalls, it really is a beauty spot. There is a central lake. Along the well constructed paths you will nd a number of dierent routes to follow. 18Happy New Year, fellow Sandbachians. Now that Christmas is done and dusted for another year, many people turn their attention to making resolutions for the coming twelve months, even though the vast majority fail to see them through. The most common resolutions naturally focus on improving your life, whether that be in terms of health, wealth, or making some other changes for the better. Exercise more, lose some weight, quit smoking, take on a new hobby, spend less, see friends and family more regularly… the list goes on. New Year’s resolutions are easy to make but can be very dicult to stick to. If you’re still persevering come Easter, you’re doing well.If you are inclined to kick start 2025 on a quest for physical perfection, our town is blessed with dierent gyms to suit most needs and budgets, not to mention Man About TownByGreg Hallsome lovely areas to simply go for a walk or run. I say this as someone who used to run regularly (before my knees and hips decided they hated me) but also very reluctantly, because although I wasn’t the worst runner in the world, I was certainly one of the most unenthusiastic. Running, as far as I am concerned, is boring, exhausting, and should only be embarked upon when being chased. But, if you absolutely must run, you could do a lot worse than the streets, canal tow paths and country lanes of picturesque Sandbach.Alternatively, you might vow to eat healthier or go on a diet. After all, most of us over-indulge throughout the previous month, and if you haven’t spent Christmas Day working through a big tub of chocolates while watching The Great Escape I’d go so far as to argue you’re not Christmassing properly, but even small changes to what you eat can make a huge dierence. Again, Sandbach is blessed with all manner of healthier options, whether that’s dining out or buying fresh groceries and health supplements.Help is also on hand for those wanting to quit smoking, drinking or both. Ashelds Primary Care Centre can oer advice, and there are various support groups locally. It’ll also save you money. Finally, why not volunteer somewhere? There are dozens of charity shops and local groups looking for support, and if you have the time to spare, plus the inclination to help others, it can be an extremely rewarding experience.Just make sure your resolutions are achievable and realistic. There’s no point challenging yourself to stick to a regime you have no chance of completing. And, if you don’t manage to last twelve months, don’t beat yourself up about it. There’s always next year. It’ll be here before we know it!

22My name is Dave Carter lead walker and Director of Men walking and Talking .First walk started 01/10/2024 SandbachAt 16 years old I joined the army, everything I ever wanted and worked hard to be the best I could. I started o at the army foundation college in Harrogate and quickly became a standout recruit. Unfortunately a snowboarding trip with the army cut short my career and a medical discharge soon followed. But being a soldier taught me so much about resilience, teamwork, brotherhood , empathy, grit, strength and so much more. I’ve worked a few dierent jobs over the years but as family life was coming in I started working at Bentley motors for that job security and career progression. I soon moved up through the ranks with my hard work and determination to learn more. I progressed well at Bentley but It didn’t challenge me and with that I started to get lazy and lose focus on what I really wanted from life. I came for the payslip and that was it. In 2023 I took redundancy from Bentley and now working towards getting my personal training and strength and conditioning Men Walking & TalkingBy Dave CarterWalk, Talk & Listen.coaching completed, nally getting back to what really drives me forward, helping others. I want people to nd their best selves and support them through that. I am married and have 2 amazing IVF babies that are my everything but the nancial pressure of supporting my family is what hit me like a tonne of bricks. As each month past, debt started to creep in and with poor decisions, it just got worse and worse. I reached out and spoke to a group of men and that really lifted the weight o my shoulders and helped me to see a clearer picture. I still have a lot of debt and I’m working through these problems I face, but I’m doing it on my terms. I have wanted to set something up for a long time and coming across the men walking and talking group was perfect. After 8 weeks of pushing for men to be honest with themselves and create that safe space in Sandbach, I was asked to become a director of the National project. To me this is exactly what we need more of in our communities, a simple walk and talk can go a long way to building a stronger social connection and self worth. I’m going to bring these walks to as many communities as possible . To help one man is incredible but this is for every man. We just need to step forward together. Please join in... Walk, talk , listenFollow Dave Carter, scan the QR Code...2 pups and 26 legends joined me on a dark walk down some country lanes tonight. 6 new faces and many old faces in the group. Plenty of room on the streets for all you men out there!! Come join us. Free walk - just turn up and join in Sandbach library meeting point 18:20 every Tuesday Walk for an hour Done

26colleges that combine traditional academic learning with hands-on, career-focused training. As Will Chitty, the passionate head of Crewe UTC, explained to me, these colleges are built to bridge the gap between education and industry. At Crewe UTC, students can study GCSEs, BTECs, A-Levels, and T Levels while specialising in engineering and design. The facilities, completed just eight years ago, boast state-of-the-art equipment and a modern feel, giving students a professional environment in which to develop their skills. There are currently 44 UTCs across the country, strategically placed in areas where there is a workforce shortage in specic industries. Around 65% focus on engineering, while others specialise in elds such as healthcare and media. For Will Chitty, Crewe is the perfect location for an engineering college. With its rich industrial heritage and the presence of numerous large employers in the area, the UTC has prime opportunities to prepare students for meaningful careers.Creating Aspirations, Not Just Opportunities - What sets Crewe UTC apart is its emphasis on aspiration. Beyond just preparing students for jobs, the college aims to inspire them to reach for ambitious career goals. Every Thursday morning, students attend an assembly where a guest employer delivers a presentation, sharing insights into their industry and highlighting potential career paths. This initiative was one of Will Chitty’s priorities when he joined the college four years ago. Recognising the need for stronger ties with local businesses, he introduced a dedicated coordinator to foster these partnerships. Mr. Fergusson, a seasoned educator with real-world industry experience, was brought on board to take the lead. His role involves building relationships with employers, aligning their expertise with the college’s curriculum, and ensuring work placements and presentations are meaningful for students.Building Vital Connections - Will Chitty cannot emphasise enough the importance of connecting with employers, building relationships, and maintaining them. He proudly If, like me, you have a child in Year 11 preparing for their GCSEs, your household is probably a whirlwind of conversations about what comes next.It was during a casual chat with other local parents that I rst heard about Crewe UTC. A mum and her son spoke with such enthusiasm about their experience that I couldn’t resist nding out more. What I discovered was a modern, forward-thinking educational option designed to prepare students for the careers of tomorrow.Crewe UTC, ocially known as the Crewe Engineering and Design University Technical College, is a specialised college for students aged 13 to 19. Its focus is on equipping young people with the skills and qualications they need to thrive in the workforce, all while fostering a passion for engineering and design. What Makes Crewe UTC Special? - University Technical Colleges (UTCs) like Crewe UTC are government-funded Katy meets... Crewe UTCby Katy O’Reganshared that all 40 assemblies for the next academic year are already booked with employer presentations, but Crewe UTC is always eager to build new partnerships. The college’s links with businesses extend far beyond Thursday morning assemblies. Employers contribute through work placements and set real-life projects for the students. These projects are an integral part of the curriculum, with students completing a minimum of six each year.Employers design the tasks, setting expectations and parameters, while students work in teams to develop solutions. Once the projects are complete, the employers return to hear the students present their work. This hands-on approach allows students to gain invaluable experience, preparing them for the realities of the working world while also giving businesses a chance to shape the next generation of talent.Industry Placements: Adding Real Value - Another key role for employers is providing industry placements. Will Chitty avoids the term “work experience” because he believes it undervalues the importance of these opportunities. At Crewe UTC, parents aren’t tasked with nding placements for their children; instead, the college takes charge to ensure these opportunities add real value to the curriculum. For one of their qualications, the T Levels, Crewe UTC has already secured industry placements for students enrolling in September 2025. This proactive approach reects the college’s commitment to preparing students for their future careers.Growing a Future in Engineering - Crewe UTC’s reputation is growing year by year, driven largely by word of mouth from satised students and parents. Students can join in Year 10 to complete their GCSEs, oering an excellent opportunity for those passionate about engineering to focus on their chosen career path from an early age. Alternatively, students can enrol in Year 12 to pursue T Levels and BTEC qualications. Will Chitty understands the value of honing in on engineering as a sector from a young age. He highlights that 5% of the UK workforce is employed in engineering, yet there’s a signicant shortage of skilled and experienced professionals. Engineering not only supports most sectors but is also the driving force behind technological advancement. As he says, “Engineering doesn’t just adapt to technology—it moves it forward!”Looking Ahead - As someone unfamiliar with T Levels before exploring Crewe UTC, I’ve been inspired to delve deeper into this qualication and how it complements the traditional A Levels and BTECs. In the next edition, I’ll explore these in greater detail, highlighting what they mean for students’ futures. For now, if you’re considering Crewe UTC for your child, the next open evening is planned for 30th January. More information, including how to book and apply, is available on their website utccrewe.co.uk. Alternatively, prospective students and their parents are welcome to arrange a tour of the facilities by emailing enquiries@creweutc.org.uk. Prospective businesses who would like to collaborate with the UTC can also contact them via the same email address.Crewe UTC isn’t just a school; it’s a springboard for young people passionate about engineering, equipping them with the qualications, experience, and connections to thrive in an ever-evolving world. For those looking to step condently into the future, Crewe UTC is a place where aspirations take ight.

Wicked, Palace TheatreByBackstage BillyMan) delivering Dancing through life and the ending of Act one with Iconic Defying Gravity – which the screams and clapping says it all echoes throughout the theatre.Like all good stories – Our villain’s The Wizard (Simeon Truby) his side kick Madam Morrible (Donna Berlin). This Wicked musical – winner of 100 global awards and seen by over 65 million people.Already the longest 18th year both from the West end to the Tour – it has had fans gripped and now the lm Wicked at the Cinema. You will truly love this show in Manchester at the Palace Theatre until 12th January 2025.This would make an ideal present for Christmas and treat to see this show.My 5 Star rating is touch on what I feel and love about this show, I would throw in a pair of Ruby slippers as well for the show and amazing cast.Tickets: www.atgtickets.com/shows/wicked/palace-theatre-manchesterFollow Billy on Instagram and X, search ‘Backstagebilly’Watch news and reviews www.backstagebilly.ukPhotos: MattCrockett

A home is for nesting, not just for investing, soit’s crucial to find a property that fits both your current and future needs. Therefore, the real skill isfinding the right buyer, not just any buyer. Estate Agents have a habit of focusing on statistics. The reality being; the only person who caresabout your market share is your mother.. 34Dinner in the Grill & Smokehouse Restaurant was nothing short of exceptional. We began with two delicious starters: Traditional Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimp, served with warm, buttered crumpets that melted in the mouth, and their Signature Treacle Cured Smoked Salmon, delicately smoked over whiskey barrel wood On a chilly winter evening, what could be more inviting than a classic English country inn, with roaring res, rustic wooden beams, and an atmosphere steeped in history? The Wild Boar Estate in the heart of the Lake District oers all this and so much more. Nestled in the serene Gilpin Valley, halfway between Kendal and Bowness-on-Windermere, this charming inn provided the ideal escape for my mum and me—a chance to reconnect, relax, and indulge in some truly memorable experiences. From the moment we arrived, we were enveloped in the inn’s warmth and character. The lounge welcomed us with its crackling open res and cozy nooks, perfect for unwinding with a glass of wine (or two!). The decor struck the perfect balance between rustic charm and boutique comfort—think original oak beams, snug seating, and quirky touches that make the place feel truly unique. The Wild Boar Estate, Crook Road, Windermere, Cumbria, LA23 3NF www.englishlakes.co.uk/the-wild-boar 0333 2203 108 Review...Getaway at The Wild Boar Estateby Katy O’Reganchips, paired with caper and dill potato salad and fresh treacle bread. For mains, I opted for the rib-eye steak, perfectly cooked and rich with avors from their in-house smokehouse, while Mum enjoyed the slow-cooked lamb shank, tender and seasoned to perfection, falling eortlessly o the bone. Every bite was an absolute treat. The meal ended on a high note with two standout desserts: the creamy Baked Ribblesdale Curd Cheesecake accompanied by tangy poached blackberries, and the Smoked Cumberland Farmhouse Cheese, served with homemade tea bread and a drizzle of mead—a delightful and unique nish to a perfect meal. Our room was a delight: individually styled, with a big comfy bed, uy pillows, and a bath we didn’t want to leave. It felt like a little haven of luxury, with all the cozy charm of a traditional inn. Before heading home, we took a short stroll through the estate’s 72 acres of private woodland, exploring the peaceful tarns and hidden corners. For those with more time, the Wild Boar oers exciting activities like archery, clay pigeon shooting, and even axe throwing—perfect for an adventurous twist to a country break. With its location in the Lake District National Park, The Wild Boar Estate is the perfect base for exploring nearby Windermere, Bowness, and Kendal. Though we only stayed for one night, we made the most of our trip, squeezing in a scenic drive and a peek at the stunning Lake Windermere before heading back to claim our spot by the roaring re. Our mum-and-daughter getaway was everything we hoped for: relaxing, indulgent, and full of charm. The food was outstanding, the sta were warm and attentive, and the setting couldn’t have been more perfect. Whether for a romantic escape, a family break, or a foodie adventure, The Wild Boar Estate oers an unforgettable experience. As we packed up to leave, I couldn’t help but think how perfect The Wild Boar Estate would be for another visit—this time with my husband. The cozy res, exceptional food, and peaceful woodland walks make it an ideal setting for a romantic getaway. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I can already imagine us enjoying a candlelit dinner, toasting with a glass of wine in the lounge, and strolling hand-in-hand through the frosty woodland paths. This charming retreat is tailor-made for moments like these—full of romance, relaxation, and memories waiting to be made.
