8From the bar, by Rich...AS you read this, we’ll have just about gotten over what has felt like a month of holidays! The standout for me was the coming together of the village on the Coronation weekend, the sun was out, (along with pretty much everyone!), the atmosphere was buzzing with laughter, and there were soooo many smiles. Holmes Chapel was a gorgeous place to be that afternoon. As we now approach the warmer temperatures and longer nights of summer, here are a couple of frozen cocktail recipes that will be sure to make your evenings go by with a bang. Hopefully you’ve got a decent blender, but if not don’t panic, you can buy crushed ice in most supermarkets or you could use ice cream, or frozen coconut milk as a substitution! A little tip: put your glass in the freezer for 30mins before you serve! The traditional Pina Colada is one of the simplest cocktails to make, and a frozen one is no different. Blend 2 shots white rum, 1.5 shots pineapple juice (or 5 chunks of fresh pineapple), 1.5 shots of coconut cream with a cup of ice and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you swap the rum for brandy you’ll make yourself a kappa colada! For all you mocha lovers, how does a Frozen Mudslide grab you!? Put 2 shots of vodka, 3 of Baileys, 3 of Kahlua, 4-6 scoops of vanilla ice cream, a good squirt of chocolate syrup (the stuff for ice cream is great), in a blender with 15 big ice cubes and blitz. If it’s looking a bit runny, stick it back in the freezer for 10mins to firm up. Take your glass, drizzle some syrup around inside, pour and top with squirty cream and crushed flake for a bit of extra naughtiness.Lastly for this issue, if you’ll permit me, I’m going to do a little self promotion… ish. The 10th of June will see the villages favourite DPD driver, Gaz, host the charity auction and raffle night forerunner for his 72 holes of golf at the end of the month. He and a couple of his mates raised nearly £10,000 for Macmillan the last time they did this, and are again hoping to raise another decent amount for this wonderful charity. As many of you know, Macmillan hold a very, very dear place in my heart, so along with a number of one-off’s for the auction, we’ll be hosting the evening at the Bottle Bank. There’ll be food vendors, music, and some quite frankly amazing things to either bid on or chance your luck in the raffle. If you can, please come down to the bar on the 10th, with your friends and families for an afternoon and evening of fun in aid of such a worthy cause.Rich, The Beer Emporium

12Days Out & Meals Out reviews...I travelled to Altrincham for a very special lunch with my daughter. To a very rare 100% gluten free deli and cafe. It was amazing and so worth the 20min drive. As we checked over the cakes on the counter before taking a seat, I showed her the chalk board sign “Everything is Gluten Free”. Her eyes lit up as she took it in. My daughter loved the fact she could order anything on the menu and anything off the counter. It gave her the freedom that being gluten free steals on a daily basis. The menu is great and you can buy things to take home too as it’s also a deli. Breakfast is served all day and includes really interesting items like eggy bread and pancakes. There is a pastry section with a cheese and onion pie or one of their daily special pastries served with chips and baked beans/salad. A whole selection of sandwich fillings which can be in bread, a bagel, toast or as a salad. The Children’s menu is actually amazing too. Giving both hot and cold options. The prices for all items are very reasonable especially the fact that it’s all Gluten free which is always priced higher than “muggle food” which is what some Gluten Free people call normal food for fun.My daughter struggled to choose as there was so much she fancied. Finally she went for Hot Chick Bagel which was overspilling with fresh chicken smothered in a lemon drop chilli mayo. I ordered potato cake stack with ham, cheese and jalapeño. We shared the meals so we could both try each other’s. My daughter really enjoyed the bagel but especially liked the potato cake, so much so, she said she wants to order that next time we visit. For dessert we went to have a look at the cakes again. My daughter chose a slice of chocolate biscuit cake which was a rich mouse with chunks of biscuit in. The owner was really friendly and chatty. Our whole visit was really enjoyable and we would love to visit again soon. If you cant get to Altrincham they offer delivery to Manchester and Cheshire. Open Thursday to Sunday 10am - 4pm. 8, 10 Oxford Rd, Altrincham WA14 2DY Jenny, Days Out and Meals Out Reviews You can find more reviews on my Facebook page & Instagram, search ‘Days Out and Meals Out’

16Man about town...AS far as secondary education goes, our town offers Sandbach High School (for girls) and Sandbach School (for boys) – until sixth form when students can mix in coeducational harmony. Since I only have sons, my experience of Sandbach High School has been limited to using the adjacent leisure centre, where I can sometimes be spotted on a Friday evening trying to persuade my friends that I am not entirely hopeless at badminton. In contrast, my eldest son has been going to Sandbach School for two years now and loves it. A mighty impressive building it is too. My late Grandad, when first visiting the town, said it reminded him of “Hogarths” from “those wizard films.” He never was great with names. While a school has existed in the town since 1578, it wasn’t until nearly a century later that a formal grammar was founded by local philanthropists Richard Lea (who donated land for the schoolhouse) and Francis Welles (who helped fund it). To commemorate their contribution, Lea and Welles later had ‘Houses’ named after them in the Sandbach School House system, which involves pupils taking part in a range of competitive activities throughout the year to earn points for their House. Pupils are allocated their House when they join in Year 7, during a formal ceremony where the headteacher places a magical ‘Sorting Hat’ on their head for it to loudly proclaim their affiliation to the rest of the school. The other two Houses are Ward (after Dr Charles Ward of Bradwall, who bequeathed the generous sum of £200 to the school when he died in 1718 – although, I’m now spending a similar amount on my son’s lunch account each term, and I’m yet to be recognised) and Craig, in honour of Craig Phillips, the first winner of Big Brother in 2000. Possibly.Interestingly, for a short period in the 1980s there were in fact six Houses at Sandbach School, with Ward being briefly renamed Hall (for obvious reasons, I personally think the change should have been permanent) and the addition of both Scott (presumably after George Gilbert Scott, who designed the original building) and Kent, because Superman was incredibly popular at the time.Due to a strong sporting history, there are several professional rugby players among the school’s alumni, as well as footballers Nick Powell – who now plays for Stoke City – and the late Paul Ware, who I remember fondly from his time at my club, Stockport County, in the 1990s. The school’s motto is ‘Ut Severis Seges’ which translates as ‘As you sow, so shall you reap’ although that that just makes me think of Heather Small and Tom Jones from that ‘Perfect Day’ music video.Greg Hall, Mercury Copywriting Services

20Katy meets... A Lench Building GroupAdrian speaks of this accomplishment with immense pride, and rightfully so. In fact, the very first apprentice has ascended to Build Director within the firm.Adrian also holds a strong commitment to supporting the local community and charities. The Lench family, unfortunately, experienced the loss of a team member to prostate cancer recently, and they have plans to organise fundraising events in memory of their colleague. Additionally, they have been longstanding supporters of the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young and proudly sponsor local young sports teams and individuals.Once TTL Building and Maintenance kickstart the construction of your new extension or development, they have a team of over 300 trusted contractors and skilled in-house staff, including bricklayers, joiners, plumbers, electricians, and more. This means they have all bases covered in a single journey, from preparing the ground to adding those perfect finishing touches. With their expertise spanning a wide range of projects, including new builds, extensions, barn conversions, and turnkey endeavors, they bring a wealth of experience to the table. Moreover, A Lench Building Contractors boasts an in-house buyer, enabling them to procure materials and secure the best prices available. Throughout the entire project, Chris diligently oversees project management and keeps a watchful eye on costs, ensuring it stays within budget and on schedule. This seamless communication between Chris and the builder is a significant advantage, as it eliminates any obstacles and ensures a smooth workflow. On a personal level, from my initial impression of both Chris and Adrian, it is evident that they are two exceptionally hardworking and compassionate individuals. Their dedication shines through when they discuss their involvement in the community and their commitment to nurturing apprentices. Adrian takes great pride in giving me a tour of their office, introducing me to the entire staff. He proudly showcases their collection of building awards and heartfelt thank-you certificates from charities they have supported, while he admits that recognition is not their motivation for supporting charities, their primary goal is to provide as much help as they can. As a family-oriented man, Adrian strongly believes in the importance of training and developing his team. They regularly organise team-building days to foster strong relationships within the business, and from the moment new staff members join, he encourages empowerment and growth.Having met Chris and Adrian, I now have a comprehensive understanding of the collaborative structure of A Lench Building Contractors, with their partnership with Wild Goose Architecture and TTL Building Contractors and Maintenance. This partnership allows them to harness the expertise and resources of a larger company while maintaining a personalised approach and genuine understanding of the significance your home holds for you. With their combined strength, they are equipped to provide exceptional service. Once your dream home is completed, it becomes a canvas for countless new life stories, creating cherished memories for years to come. KatyYOUR home is probably the biggest purchase you will ever make. It is the place where families grow, and life stories are made. Therefore, if you make the decision to extend and develop your property, having a designer and builder who understand how important it is to you becomes crucial.I took a quick drive to Kidsgrove to meet the team behind the Lench Building Group and get a glimpse of how they expertly guide homeowners through the exciting process of improving and extending their homes.A Lench Building Contractors is a prominent business that offers its services to large-scale home and commercial builders. Along with them, they work in tandem with TTL Building and Maintenance LTD and Wild Goose Architecture, who specialise in crafting breath taking residential properties. The journey of improving your home has two main parts, and the beauty of working with TTL and Wild Goose is that they collaborate throughout the entire process. It typically starts with Chris Rye from Wild Goose Architecture, an Architectural Designer with over 30 years of experience working with well-respected firms across Cheshire and Staffordshire. He begins by discovering your dreams and aspirations for your home during a face-to-face consultation. Then, he puts together some initial ideas, timelines, and, most importantly, works within your budget. Once you’re satisfied and have appointed him, he digs deeper with site surveys and creates a virtual 3D model to help you envision what your new home will look like. Chris ensures that the client’s budget and expectations are always at the top of his mind, and having Adrian Lench from TTL nearby is a massive bonus, as he can provide cost estimates for everything from groundworks to a complete bespoke fit out where required.Next, Chris will assess whether the proposed build requires planning permission or falls within permitted development guidelines. If planning permission is necessary, he will handle all the required documentation and prepare detailed drawings. He will then submit them and diligently follow through until approval is successfully obtained.Once everything is set to go, all the building works are entrusted to TTL. The mastermind behind TTL is Adrian Lench, a seasoned and skilled builder. Adrian, along with his wife Jackie, founded A Lench Building Contractors in 1987. His journey began as a bricklayer at the age of 16, which is why he places great importance on training and nurturing young individuals in the profession. Throughout the years, they have proudly employed numerous apprentices across their entire business, many of whom have gone on to establish long and prosperous careers.

Saving for the future can often be a challenging concept for children to make sense of; given that they’re not on the career ladder yet, so the idea of putting money away for a later date may seem confusing or even unnecessary. Like many financial topics, there’s huge advantages to learning these valuable lessons early in order to enjoy future benefits.Talking about money can help children understand the choices adults have to make about spending and what we need money for - the difference between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. Pocket money can give a sense of responsibility and it’s a good idea to make sure children have a safe place to keep money, try getting them a purse or a wallet, or even a prefunded debit card and explain why it’s important to keep money safe.Introduce savings by talking about what your child could buy with their money as it starts to grow. Would they like to get that teddy bear or save for something bigger and better? Use counting to visually show their money increasing. You can also help your children by talking to a financial advisor, there a range of savings plans for you and your children and they will be able to help you better understand the long term value of being sensible with money. Ka PieNEW Zealand, with its remarkable offerings of Rugby, wine, stunning landscapes, and the iconic Lord of the Rings film sets, also holds a surprising treasure close to its heart—the humble meat pie. Since the early days of British settlers in 1863, this savoury delight has become deeply ingrained in New Zealand’s culinary heritage, consistently earning the title of the nation’s favourite comfort food. In the charming village of Holmes Chapel, Kiwi Hayden Parsons found himself longing for the taste of home. Fuelled by nostalgia, he took it upon himself to bring the essence of New Zealand to his new community. Thus, Ka Pie was born—an endeavour that would fill the air with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pies. Every week, Hayden tantalizes taste buds with an array of flavours that cater to every pie lover’s palate. From classic Lamb with mint gravy to the bold combination of taco mince and cheese or the indulgent creaminess of peppered steak, his creations offer a symphony of savoury satisfaction. Vegetarians and those seeking a touch of sweetness are also treated to a diverse selection. Operating from a five-star hygiene kitchen, Hayden creates a limited number of these delectable pies. Demand is high, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. The secret to securing your slice of pie heaven lies in swift ordering on his Facebook page. The reward, however, is well worth the effort. With orders pouring in, Hayden meticulously orchestrates the collection process, ensuring that every pie enthusiast can relish their eagerly awaited bounty. And a few days later, the moment arrives—an opportunity to savour a freshly baked pie at home, its golden crust whispering promises of pure delight. Hayden’s dedication to Ka Pie is a testament to his devotion as both a family man and a culinary virtuoso. With experience in the hospitality industry, he has honed his skills in kitchens both in his home country and in his new village. Since the inception of Ka Pie, Hayden has garnered a devoted following, myself included. Pie enthusiasts from far and wide embark on a weekly pilgrimage to experience the magic of his creations. This recognition culminated in his recent triumph, earning him the distinguished title of “The Knutsford Guardian Best Pies for 2023.” Within the realm of flaky crusts and mouth-watering fillings, Hayden has carved out a remarkable niche. His passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the craft have elevated him to the ranks of culinary greatness. Yet, he remains a humble artisan, infusing every creation with his heart and soul. So, as you embark on your own journey to savour the perfection that is Ka Pie, remember the man behind it all—a devoted family man, a flavour ambassador, and a guardian of tradition. Each bite is an invitation to join the ranks of those captivated by the magic of Hayden’s pies. Let your taste buds revel in the exquisite blend of flavours, and become part of the legacy—an ode to the power of a humble pie in forging connections and bringing joy, one delectable mouthful at a time.Katy

36JUNE is the month for roses. Signifying aspects of love, the first buds are a pleasure of early summer. Time for a touch of floral heritage then? Yes, please. So how does this relate to the historic environment? Well, not only roses, blooms of every description bear snippets of social history… and in unexpected places.Over time many different societies developed the idea of linking the natural world – whether trees, leaves, fruits, nuts, berries, herbs, weeds or even seashells - with qualities and sentiments. Declarations that maybe couldn’t find open expression for whatever reason were symbolised instead. It was a kind of covert communication. Particularly popular in Victorian and Edwardian periods the fashion for flower-meanings reached a high art. So detailed were these quaint codes that little illustrated vocabularies were produced: dictionaries of ‘plant-speak’.This centuries-old ‘language of flowers’ lingers on into the present day. Apart from roses being the quintessential representation of love, is explanation really needed for rosemary, olive branch, lily, laurel, or four-leaved clover? Local waterways, surprisingly, give us some wonderful examples.Working narrowboats passing south of Sandbach along the Trent & Mersey Canal doubled as homes. 19th century economic necessity had caused families to abandon land-based dwelling and cram into small spaces aboard. So that life afloat would resemble a household, commercial boats became a canvas. Roses and daisies, sometimes sunflowers, came into bloom as highly stylised versions of the real thing, outside and in. Cramped domestic interiors still found space to feature decorations of petals, twining leaves…and stylised roses in warm symbols of love. Surely no coincidence?Artistically the skill is distinctive. Dark colours were applied before highlights A brushstroke created a petal. Repetition formed a flower. Delicately veined, stemless leaves intertwined. In this way borders or bunches transformed domestic objects and ultimately the entire living space. The ‘knobstick rose’ style was a mid-Cheshire speciality. Adding a touch of wonder and fantasy to the workaday world, another romantic feature besides roses was … castles. Impossible turrets and towers of fairy-tale proportions were usually paired with bright blue lakes or bridged rivers. The motif first arose in cottages of the eighteenth century. Now, this folk art is recognisably and uniquely ‘waterways’.Vivid, plant-based designs have adorned narrowboats, and added meaning, for generations. Take a closer look when next treading the towpaths. Oh, if not already obvious - an olive branch is extended for peace; a lily stands for purity; laurel means glory, and if you have this kind of clover you’re in luck. And rosemary? For remembrance.Julie Elizabeth SmalleySandbach’s heritage...
