I wonder if the scorching temperatures will persist as we enter July. It's peculiar because I typically enjoy the heat, especially when on holiday in hot countries. However, I find myself constantly trying to stay cool these days. My heart goes out to our two dogs, Jake and Teddy, who struggle in this heat due to their furry coats. We've provided them with a doggy paddling pool to cool off, but all they've done so far is drink the water!July marks the beginning of the school summer holidays, and I have an exciting adventure planned with my son. We're embarking on a journey through Vietnam, staying in hostels, taking overnight trains, and spending a few nights on a junk boat. I'm filled with anticipation since, in my younger days, I never had the opportunity to travel extensively, only reaching as far as Fuerteventura! While I'm away, my husband will remain at home, taking care of our business, Go Local, as well as our beloved dogs. Each holds equal importance in our lives. This year, we've decided to introduce an additional magazine edition in September. Some of our advertisers shared that when we don't publish a magazine, they experience a quieter month. Therefore, we made the decision to include an 11th edition to meet their needs.I hope you have a wonderful July and I will speak to you very soon.Business InsightsScan to Listen & Subscribearchpublications.com/podcastDENTAL IMPLANTS • FULL MOUTH RECONSTRUCTION SEDATION • CROWNS • BRIDGEWORK • VENEERS ORTHODONTIC BRACES • BESPOKE DENTURES TEETH WHITENING • STAIN & TARTAR REMOVAL WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL • ROOT CANAL THERAPY 79 Liverpool Road, Kidsgrove, ST7 4EW 01782 782 520 admin@kidsgrovedental.com www.kidsgrovedental.comAll aspects of dentistry carried out by our experienced multidisciplinary team.NOW ACCEPTING NOW ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS NEW PATIENTS Our dental plans Our dental plans start from £13 per start from £13 per month and members month and members receive 10% discount receive 10% discount on all treatment.on all treatment.

6Spark Lane Nurseries...AT Spark Lane Nurser ies, the vibrant flowers burst into life, inviting me to create a captivating hanging basket. Seeking Brian Lowe’s botanical wisdom, I discovered an exquisite mix of flowers that would infuse my space with enchanting colours and radiance.Brian’s top choice was the Surfinia flower, renowned for its captivating beauty. With its trailing growth and abundant blooms, it created a mesmerizing display of elegance. Surfinias came in a variety of shades, from bold reds and purples to soft pinks and whites, adding charm and allure to any garden or outdoor area. Their delicate yet striking appearance made them the preferred option for those seeking the undeniable beauty of nature.Next, Lobelia White Star, also known as Lobelia erinus ‘White Star,’ added its unique charm to the basket. Its star-shaped white flowers stood out against lush green foliage, evoking purity and grace. This compact, trailing plant gracefully cascaded over pot edges, bringing sophistication and beauty to garden beds, borders, or containers. To infuse a touch of sunshine, Brian included Bidens yellow daisy, scientifically known as Bidens ferulifolia. This charming flowering plant boasted bright yellow, daisy-like blooms that danced amidst delicate, fern-like foliage. Its abundant and eye-catching flowers brought cheerful colour to gardens, borders, and containers. With its ability to withstand heat and drought, Bidens yellow daisy proved to be a resilient and low-maintenance choice, enhancing outdoor spaces with its radiant beauty throughout an extended blooming period.Under Brian Lowe’s botanical expertise, the harmonious blend of Surfinias, Lobelia White Star, and Bidens yellow daisy transformed my hanging basket into a captivating masterpiece, radiating the natural beauty that brightened my home.Katy

8ENJOYING al fresco coffee somewhere over summer? Highly likely. Sandbach has ever-more choices. Public places serving this might not seem like town heritage. Yet they conceal quite a story. So then, what’s historical about café culture? And how and when did Sandbach join?Cafés are nothing new. Go back almost four hundred years, to the mid-17th century, when travellers visiting exotic Turkey and beyond brought back some unusual new drinks. Non-alcoholic, these perky beverages instead were caffeinated. Cue the introduction of… the Coffee House. This cleverly novel setting tempted tipplers out of the taverns… and many husbands out of the home. Why? Because the stimulating but bitter black drink, served up in a dish, was initially promoted as a health remedy. The line-up on offer included teas (although far less popular), drinking chocolate, and sherbets. That first happened not in rural Cheshire but in Oxford, catching on in other cities, London especially. For a penny entrance charge gentlemen and their pipes could take up a place on benches around large tables set out with all the latest pamphlets and periodicals. The huge appeal was chance to discuss news, gossip, politics - often dream up business ideas, and even whole new enterprises, some eventually becoming famous. Important social spaces! Early cafés were obviously a smoky, creative hotbed. Downsides however – sounding familiar - were the perceived threat to authority by spreading ‘false news’. In 1676 King Charles II wanted the ‘evil and dangerous’ dens banned outright. Neither were they were female-friendly, stirring the Women’s Petition Against Coffee movement in 1674. Tea-drinking overtook coffee consumption in Georgian and Victorian periods. Here in the mid-19th century tea dealers were numerous. All loose leaf: no tea bags for another hundred years! Tea-shops though as a place, particularly for ladies to relax inside away from their homes and chat over a pot with friends, didn’t exist anywhere until very late in the century. Riding the trend? Edwardian Sandbach. So, who catered for ‘prototype café-lovers’? On the High Street grocer William Tompkinson was just that in 1902. By 1906, possibly cashing in on the (new-ish) craze he had opened Refreshment Rooms. Also operating Refreshment Rooms that year was Thomas Kelsall. His were on Green Street. The range was expanded by 1910 with John William Gotsell’s establishment at 12 Hawk Street. Are any of these people your ancestors?Despite occasional opposition the tradition continues, extended outdoors if possible. Differences over time intrigue, yet it’s lingering similarities which amaze. Something to contemplate next time you sit down with a cuppa.Julie Elizabeth SmalleySandbach’s heritage...

12Katy meets... Holmes Gifts & InteriorsFOR a refreshing home makeover or a summer self-care treat, head over to Holmes Gifts and Interiors on Church Walk in Holmes Chapel. Immerse yourself in their exquisite range of products, featuring dazzling jewellery that exudes elegance, plush throws and cushions that invite relaxation, enchanting kitchen accessories, and delightful children’s gifts. Prepare to be captivated by their offerings, adding a touch of charm and comfort to your home. The shop has been located on the cobbled floor for four years, following its expansion from a smaller premises across the road. The idea originated when two friends, Kerry and Chloë, were discussing their shared passion for homewares, shopping, and design, and envisioned turning it into a business. Chloë, finding her teaching job demanding in relation to her family life, reached out to Kerry one day and proposed, “Let’s do this.” Since then, they have never looked back. After conducting thorough research, they began by participating in fairs, markets, and setting up stalls at friends’ homes. As the business gained momentum, the time came to inaugurate their first shop in 2016.The duo works seamlessly together, sharing similar tastes and a commitment to ensuring there is something for everyone in the shop. Whether you’re a husband seeking a last-minute gift for your wife, a grandparent in search of a present for a newborn, or a best friend needing to purchase something for a birthday, Holmes Gifts and Interiors will undoubtedly have a suitable item in stock. Over the years, they have broadened their product range to include not just interiors, but also cards, gifts, clothing, candles, bags, chocolates, Jellycat soft toys (a personal favourite of mine), and much more! Moreover, their teamwork is complemented by the delightful presence of Mary, a devoted member of the team who treats the business as if it were her own. Her ever-present smile and eagerness to assist customers make her an invaluable asset. When it comes to replenishing their shelves, Kerry and Chloë seize the opportunity to attend industry buying fairs at renowned venues like the NEC and Harrogate. These events serve as a gateway to connect with talented designers, discover new brands and products, and stay ahead of upcoming trends. Kerry and Chloë’s commitment to sourcing products from independent suppliers sets them apart from high street retailers, and their attendance at these industry events helps them maintain their distinct edge.Season after season, I am constantly impressed by their keen eye for curating the perfect selection of products. Whether I’m in search of a thoughtful Father’s Day gift or a special token for my dear mother, I have unwavering confidence that Holmes Gifts and Interiors will have the ideal item awaiting me. Their dedication to keeping their stock fresh and ever-evolving ensures that each visit feels like a unique experience. Chloë confesses that their penchant for variety and a touch of restless enthusiasm often leads them to rearrange the shop and replenish the shelves whenever a new delivery arrives. In a conversation with Chloë, she encapsulates the essence of being an independent business owner with utmost clarity: the sheer thrill that accompanies every sale, regardless of whether it’s a humble pound or a generous hundred. Each transaction not only contributes to their livelihood but also allows them to pursue their true passion.Even after six years, every successful sale elicits a celebratory dance from them. Whether it takes place in their kitchen at 10 p.m. or after you’ve left the shop, I assure you, it happens. Next time you pay a visit to Holmes Gifts and Interiors, take a moment to pause by the front door and glance back through the glass—you might just catch them in their joyful revelry.Katy

Just like we save money to buy things we need, we also have to save money for when we’re older and no longer working. This is called a pension.A pension is like a special savings account, it’s a way to make sure that once we retire, we still have money to live comfortably; since you won’t have a regular salary from your job. Retirement is when people stop working and enjoy their free time. When you have a job, a portion of the money you earn goes into your pension. This money is set aside in the pension, for your future, because they are a long-term savings plan. The money you put in is invested, which means it is able to grow. The more you save and the longer you work, the bigger your pension will be.When you reach a certain age, usually around 65, you can then start using your pension money to support yourself during retirement. You can use your pension to pay for things like your home, food and fun activities. In conclusion, a pension is a way for grown-ups to save money while they’re working so they can take care of themselves in the future. It’s like a special gift they give themselves to enjoy their golden years without having to worry about money. Haven Global Strategies LimitedLet’s talk about finance...

18From the bar, with Rich...LAST issue, I gave you a number of awesome cocktails, perfect for these hot summer days (and nights!), and this month I’m going to conclude with a number of gorgeous alcohol-free cocktails that will be just as much fun for the kids as for those wishing to stay off the booze.Again, you can make these as complicated or as simple as you want to, but as with most things, the more time and effort you put in, the tastier the end result. A simple syrup is, as the name suggests, equal measures of sugar and water simmered until the sugar dissolves and the liquid thickens. To make a fruit syrup, simply add 500g of fruit to the mix, skimming off any foam as it boils. Sieve, and pour into a sterile jar or bottle for a delicious sweet fruity hit whenever you want.An Agua Fresca is a refreshing Mexican drink made with fresh fruit or seeds, a touch of sweetness and a zing of lime. Take 500g of your favourite fruit, pineapple, honeydew melon, mango or passionfruit work really well here, add 2tbs of sugar and 2 tbs of lime juice and a cup (250ml) of water to a blender. Blitz until smooth, and press through a fine sieve into a large jug. Add another 4-500ml of water, skimming off any foam that rises to the surface. Tweak the sugar and lime if you think it needs it, and pour over a tall glass filled with ice. This Ginger-Peach fizz starts off with a simple syrup infused with 2tbs of crushed ginger. Add the ginger to your sugar and water, simmer for a few minutes until all the sugars dissolved. Remove from the heat, and steep for half an hour. Sieve the mixture, and chill well. In a hi-ball glass, take a couple of slices of fresh peach, pressing with the back of a spoon to release some juices. Add a couple of glugs of the ginger syrup, fill the glass up with ice and then top with soda, decorate with a couple of mint leaves.Fancy a slushie? This super easy refreshing mint slushie is so easy to do, and takes no time at all to make. Put 400ml of lemonade, a big handful of fresh mint leaves, and 2 tall glasses of ice into a blender and blitz until it’s all combined. Pour into a glass, and chill. Personally, I love this with a good glug of coconut rum... yum.Until next time.Rich, The Beer EmporiumI wrote this article a few days before we sadly lost someone whose heart & soul made The Beer Emporium what it is today. Liam Bridle was a devoted husband & a dad-to-be, a loving son, & one of the greatest friends anyone could ever ask to have. His humour, his passion, his ability to make anyone & everyone feel like the most important person in the room was unique. Liam’s sudden passing has rocked not just our little beery family, but the community as a whole, & the world will be a little less brighter without him in it. I know I am not alone in saying that we will all miss our dear friend terribly.

26Man about town...FOR this month’s article, I decided to check TripAdvisor to see what non-Sandbachians think of our delightful town.I appreciate TripAdvisor is to the world of accurate travel reviews what Wikipedia is to the world of post-graduate research, but it’s nothing if not entertaining, particularly when someone is raging about their week in Magaluf. The first thing which struck me as I clicked on ‘THE 10 BEST Things to Do in Sandbach 2023’ (just to be clear, they capitalised the first three words in the headline, that wasn’t me leaning on Caps Lock by mistake), was that the list contains 27 entries. See, I told you TripAdvisor is unreliable. The second thing I noticed is that the best attraction in Sandbach is apparently Brereton Heath Nature Reserve. I bet those Brereton folk are livid at being tagged on to their larger neighbours, when they are a hamlet in their own right (as a side note, and purely to satisfy my curiosity, I then searched ‘Top Attractions in Brereton’ and not only was the Heath absent from their own list, but it only had one entry – a paintball centre in Holmes Chapel).Indeed, with Wheelock Farm claiming a silver medal in TripAdvisor’s run down of our best bits, if it wasn’t for Sandbach park scraping a podium finish in third, I’d contend that none of the top reasons for visiting us are technically within the town itself.Fourth place went to arguably our most famous attraction, the Saxon Crosses, while the Market Square nestles in fifth, so weary travellers can really tick off the highlights in a short space of time by enjoying both experiences simultaneously.St Mary’s wins the battle of the churches by finishing sixth, a full EIGHT (my emphasis this time) places above local rivals St John the Evangelist. I accept churches probably don’t have rivalries as such, but St John’s parishioners must surely feel aggrieved that they’ve dropped outside the top 10 in the latest rankings (and, if the title of the article had been accurate in the first place, they wouldn’t have got a mention at all).I won’t bore you with the rest of the list, suffice to say Sandbach United in 10th position is our finest sporting venue (because the cricket and rugby clubs don’t even get a mention), most of the latter entries are places to eat or drink, and, apparently, there’s an Alpaca farm in Hassall. I’m sure most people knew that already, but I didn’t, and it’s now top of my personal list to visit. You can even participate in ‘Alpaca Yoga.’ The mind boggles.I’ve heard of the Downward Dog, but the Crouching Alpaca? Sounds more like a pub.Greg Hall, Mercury Copywriting Services

30Lofts, their hidden potential...THE Benefits of Having Good Loft Access: Unlocking the Hidden PotentialA well-designed loft access system can greatly enhance the functionality and value of your home. In this article, we explore the numerous benefits of having good loft access. From increased storage space to potential conversion opportunities, a well-accessible loft holds the key to unlocking hidden potential within your property.Ample Storage Space: One of the primary advantages of good loft access is the abundant storage space it provides. The loft area is often underutilised and can become a cluttered space filled with forgotten items. With easy access to the loft, you can transform this wasted space into a functional storage area. Whether it’s seasonal decorations, suitcases, or rarely used items, having a well-designed loft access system allows for efficient and organized storage, freeing up valuable space in other parts of your home.Increased Property Value: Having good loft access can significantly increase the value of your property. Potential buyers are often drawn to homes with accessible and usable loft spaces. A well-fitted loft ladder or staircase, along with proper flooring and lighting, showcases the potential for additional living or storage areas. The prospect of expanding the living space in the future is an attractive feature, and it can give your property a competitive edge in the market.Versatile Conversion Opportunities: One of the most exciting advantages of good loft access is the possibility of converting the loft into a functional living space. With easy access, the dream of creating an extra bedroom, office, or playroom can become a reality. A well-designed loft access system provides the foundation for such transformations, making it easier to navigate and utilise the space.Energy Efficiency and Insulation: Properly accessing the loft also allows for improved energy efficiency and insulation. With easy access, homeowners can inspect and maintain insulation, ensuring it remains effective in reducing heat loss. Additionally, loft access makes it easier to carry out necessary repairs or upgrades to plumbing, electrical wiring, and heating systems, minimizing energy waste and potential long-term damage.Investing in good loft access is a decision that brings multiple benefits to homeowners. From creating additional storage space to adding value to your property through the potential for loft conversion, easy access to the loft opens up a world of possibilities. Take advantage of this hidden potential and transform your home with a well-designed loft access system.Alan, Access4Lofts

36Days Out & Meals Out reviews...A Smallwood family has opened a farm shop in memory of their loving son who sadly died following a road accident in Rushton Spencer.Alec’s parents Gill and Paul are hoping they can help local businesses by stocking locally produced food as well as their own jersey milk & freshly made cakes. The farm shop has only been open since March 2023. We went for a visit to see how they were getting on. I met Gill who was working in the little shop while watching the King’s Coronation. It was lovely to meet Gill & to hear all about what they are aiming to achieve.Alec was passionate about his animals and farming in general. From a very early age, he could be found busy in the fields tending his sheep, sowing grass for the next year. In more recent years, he had bred his own foals and reared countless sheep. The shop is a way they can help support the charity “Farms for City Children” which embodies Alec’s beliefs. The charity give children in urban areas an unforgettable week living and working on a farm. Helping them reconnect to the countryside & nature & learn about food sources. There is a table of items for sale dedicated to the Farms for City Children charity. All sales from this stock go 100% to this wonderful charity. All in Alec’s memory. The farm is a real family affair with everyone pitching in from milking the cows, baking the cakes to manning the shop and everything in between. The shop stocks their own jersey milk, cheese, bread, cereals, jams and baking ingredients. But the main attraction is the chilled display fridge full of freshly made sandwiches and a selection of take home pies. The cakes which are made by Jenny, Alec’s older sister, on the top shelf were seriously impressive. My little girl chose a massive slice of the Kinder Hippo chocolate cake, we got a slice of biscoff caramel shortbread too and a biscuit in the shape of a horse for a friend. They sell soft serve ice cream & slushies too.The farm shop is next door to Smallwood school so is perfect for an after school treat. It’s also easy to find when driving and would be a great place to stop on a bike ride.Alec’s Farm Shop is on School Lane, Smallwood, Sandbach CW11 2URJenny, Days Out and Meals Out Reviews You can find more reviews on my Facebook page & Instagram, search ‘Days Out and Meals Out’
