Writing from my kitchen, I nd myself pondering the elusive British summer, even though May was ocially the warmest on record. This year, our family has opted for a local adventure, planning to stay at my in-laws’ scenic campground in Pembrokeshire, close to the beautiful Broad Haven Beach. It’s an idyllic spot for those sunny days we’re all hoping for, perfectly set up for families, tents, and caravans alike, complete with sandy shores and plenty of activities for our pets.Pembrokeshire is not just about beautiful beaches; it’s also home to the unique Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Known for its stunning coastal scenery, the park oers visitors breathtaking views, diverse wildlife, and historical sites. The dramatic clis and secluded beaches are part of a vibrant ecosystem that is a delight to explore.Adding to the area’s charm is St Davids, Britain’s smallest city, which punches well above its weight in terms of cultural and spiritual signicance. The city is built around the majestic St Davids Cathedral, a historic pilgrimage site since the 12th century, and is a hotspot for artistic and culinary delights. In another vein, I recently reached out to major political party candidates to feature on my business podcast. Labour’s Sarah Russell graciously accepted, visiting our kitchen studio for a thoughtful discussion available at www.archpublications.com/podcast. Despite several attempts, the Conservative candidate has yet to respond. I’m still keen to provide a balanced platform and invite representatives from all major parties to participate. For anyone still undecided about summer plans, consider a trip to Pembrokeshire. Whether it’s exploring historical sites or enjoying the natural beauty, there’s plenty to make your summer memorable. Join us for what we hope will be plenty of sunny days ahead!Katy x

8Bidlea Dairy started o selling their homemade ice creams back in 2020 with just a couple of tables outside their barn. It became a lovely activity, during those odd times, togo for a walk to get some fresh milk and an ice cream. Today, it has grown massively and now has a lovely, large cafe with views over the Cheshire country side and serving much more than just milk. It is our village’s very own hidden gem. If you haven’t been I would recommend driving or even walking over to try out their homemade treats. The family-run Bidlea Dairy is in Twemlow, near Holmes Chapel. Starting with just 20 cows originally to an almost 1,000-strong herd, the reputation of their Bidlea Holstein-Fresian cows has seen them win both national and European awards. They’ve been dairy farmers for three generations. They love what they do and i personally love how the children of the family can be found helping out and getting stuck in with farming life with their parents. They have built a large wooden building which has both indoor and outdoor seating including a viewing platform where you can enjoy your ice cream cones while looking out across rolling elds and on to the famous Jodrell Bank Observatory. They serve about 20 dierent avours of ice creams, including a couple of sorbets. The ice cream is produced on site using milk from their very own herd. Get your scoops in a tub or cone. No toppings are needed on these avours, just one of Bidlea’s personalised, instagramable, wafers. There are always new and interesting avours being made and there is normally a special seasonal Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out Reviewsone to try. I recently went and tried their “Eton Mess” avour and it instantly moved in to my no.1 top avour ive had. It’s not just ice creams it’s famous for. The milk from their 1000 strong herd of Holstein-Fresian cows has a good reputation and has lead to them winning both national and European awards. They do door step milk deliveries as well as having a milk vending machine on the farm. They also make and sell a variety of single cream, whipping cream, double cream and salted butter. They have BURTS cheese made here on the premises by Claire Burt and cheese from Reaseheath College. The cafe also serves coees, hot chocolate and avoured teas. Hot homemade soup and the most amazing cakes. More recently they have added a light bites menu which has breakfast baps, toasties, sausage rolls, and homemade pies. There are beautiful homemade cakes by Jill and Gwen and cakes from Buzzy B and Baked by Bean! When ever we visit there are dierent cakes on oer, often with a seasonal special. The farm is starting to be a hub for businesses with “Zoo2U” and “Burts Cheese” located on the premises. They have held art exhibits and their function room is perfect for kids parties or meetings. The farm also puts on extra events during the holidays including animal handling at Easter, a pumpkin patch in October, meeting Santa at Christmas so keep an eye on their Facebook page to get updates.• Over 20 avours of ice creams • Cafe Open Monday - Sunday: 9am - 5pm• Milk & Ice Cream vending machines open 7am – 9:30pm• Farm animals to see• Indoor and outdoor seating• Light Bites including toasties, pasties and baps• Hot and cold Drinks• Homemade Cakes• Bidlea Dairy, Twemlow Lane, Holmes Chapel CW4 8DSYou can nd more reviews at daysoutandmealsout.com, Facebook page & Instagram, search ‘Days Out and Meals Out’

Have you ever thought of selling a property at an auction? Property sold at auction has a better chance of being sold. Historically, the auction team has sold 75%-80% of all lots oered, giving you a much greater chance of success.Legally binding - Once the hammer has fallen, you have exchanged contracts with your buyer and they are legally committed to the purchase. On average, one-third of sales through estate agents fall through after they have been agreed, so selling by auction is a far more secure way to sell.Marketing - We have developed a targeted database of local, regional and national buyers, so your property can be proactively sent out to these people.Your property will also be featured in online property portals such as Rightmove and Zoopla, our high-quality catalogues are mailed to prospective buyers in all ways including email and social media.Competitive bidding - An auction aims to generate Should you sell at auction?ByThe Cheshire Property Ladyinterest from two or more prospective buyers, which will lead them to bid against each other in the auction room and will help your property to achieve the best price on the day.Sometimes those buyers are so keen to acquire the property that they put in a pre-auction oer, and if this gure is higher than we would expect to reach in the auction room, we may recommend accepting the oer under standard auction rules, with contracts needing to be exchanged prior to the auction day.Best Price - Properties for sale at auction will often achieve a nal sale price over the original guide price set, and regularly the result is in the region of what might have been acceptable for sale through an estate agent (Private Treaty sale). What you can guarantee is that it has achieved the best price on the day.Set Price - With private treaty sales through an estate agent, the oer price agreed is not necessarily the price you will nally receive, with discounting due to any survey ndings or last-minute gazundering. With an auction, there is no room for negotiation after the hammer falls; it is the buyers’ responsibility to fully research the property before bidding.Timescale - If you are looking to sell your home or property quickly, you will know the date that it will be up for auction, and legal completion is usually set for 28 days or 56 days afterward. This is a xed timescale and is legally binding for both parties.

18Clonter or Clonter Opera Theatre is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year with the most diverse and vibrant programme in its 50 year history with entertainment from all genres of music; jazz, folk, chamber music, gospel, as well as opera, of course.Clonter’s 50th anniversary programme is also designed to inspire those who may never have been to an opera before, to “Give Opera a Go” in 2024, and take them, and Clonter’s traditional operatic audiences, on a journey of discovery with a newly commissioned bio-pic play, with music, called The Buttery House, about the life of one of world’s most famous operatic composers - Puccini.Celebrating 50 years of ClonterBy Clonter Opera Theatrewww.clonter.orgThis newly commissioned show is a rollercoaster – ride through Puccini’s life, packed full of his best loved arias, which reect the high emotions and drama, he experienced and provoked in his own colourful, and complex life. The show will include the famous aria, Nessun dorma (of football fame), as well as O mio babbino caro and Che bell sogno (as featured in the lm A room with a view). Puccini operas have played a major part in Clonter’s history, and 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of his death, and so it seems doubly tting that they are doing this, this year. The main 50th Anniversary celebrations will take place in November. Clonter’s November Opera Gala has traditionally been the most popular operatic event in the year so they have decided to put on two Galas – one evening and one matinee, this year, and pulling out all the stops, it will also be with orchestra.Clonter is, as well as a cultural destination, also an Arts Award Centre, recognised as making a valuable contribution to the health and wellbeing of school children, local residents and the elderly.Clonter aims to create innovative productions and shows which present music in a way that is entertaining and accessible. Clonter’s undercover dining options provide the perfect setting to introduce friends and family to a variety of musical gems performed by some of the nest musicians of their generation. Clonter audiences play a vital role in keeping live music theatre and the cultural eco-system of the UK alive and kicking. If you love live music, and seeing new innovative productions, with exceptionally talented artists in this quirky and intimate venue, with its eclectic programme of events, then this is the year to try out the Clonter experience, and bring friends to share this ‘hidden gem’, and secure a sustainable future for Clonter and live entertainment in Cheshire for generations to come. Free tickets are also available to anyone 26 years old or under, is a blue light card holder, or anyone attending a food bank.

22Next month, we will have a new government in place. New governments typically means change, whoever will be in charge. For small businesses, its hard to tell what it will mean but it shouldn’t stop business owners looking to the future.Future planning is never an easy thing, as we all live in uncertain times, especially economically, however it should be something a business owner thinks about. But it’s often a question of where to start. Ultimately you want to continue doing the thing that has kept you busy and what your customers keep coming back to you for.To do that, funding for growth is a good place to start. It is, of course a question of scale, ensuring any growth is done responsibly, which in turn can mean it can be done eectively. And there is support available from many dierent places and for dierent industries.Change, the forefront of business plansByRich WilcockFor example, Innovate UK Business Growth oers bespoke support for businesses, specically designed to help it grow. It can help businesses at early, growth and scaling stage. There is also the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) which helps start-ups raise money for its business over a three-year period. But it isn’t all about capital. Companies can access R&D tax credits, which are helpful for innovation within the tech sector. There is even support available for small businesses when it comes to installing superfast broadband. Growing your business comes in many ways, and it’s about looking at what suits the business on where to look for support. But future planning doesn’t simply mean growing a business. It also includes business continuity. What does that mean in reality? Essentially, it means how a business pivots, changes or continues doing what it does when it suers major disruption. It’s about picking up the pieces and putting it back together again.Research suggests only 30% of small businesses have a business continuity plan, and further research suggests that one in ve businesses suer a major disruption each year. So, it really is something that should be considered regularly.A business should start by looking at what it makes or provides and what are the critical activities required to deliver these and then look at the risk involved in carrying out these critical activities. Once that is established, a company can then look at how those activities will be maintained in the event of a disruption. Assessing these will give a business a starting point for creating a business continuity plan. Companies don’t have to do it alone either. Like funding, small businesses can access support from a variety of sources to help it establish one.Business continuity is about mitigating change whilst funding is about making a change. But whichever government is in place come July and no matter the policies that are put in place to support small businesses, change should always be at the forefront of any business planning.
WILL WRITING • WILL TRUSTS • ASSETS TRUSTPOWER OF ATTORNEY • INHERITANCE TAX PLANNINGTelephone 01270 667 912 or visit www.sanctuarytts.comSanctuary Tax & Trust Services Ltd, 41 Lawton Road, Alsager ST7 2AAAs the cost-of-living spirals and more of our children struggle to get a footing on the property ladder it is now more important than ever to plan our family’s inheritance. The team at Sanctuary Tax & Trust explain how many families nd themselves victims of avoidable losses and why simply writing a will does not guarantee our family will inherit as we wish. For the vast majority of people, we spend all our lives working to build up wealth, through property, savings and pensions we look at providing nancial security for our families and when our nal day arrives, we hope these assets will pass to the people we care about the most, partners, children, relatives and friends. Traditionally, people have chosen wills to document their wishes and while writing a will is important, it does not provide any protection for the assets within it.Considerations when planning InheritanceCare Fees – As we live longer the likelihood of needing care becomes greater and under the government’s changes to the social care act should the need for care arise, we could see our asset taken down to just £14,250. The new assessment process will see everybody with property and savings over a combined value of £23,250 being required to pay for their care.Relationship Failure – When passing assets purely through a will we see many leaving their assets to their children but not giving consideration to what would happen if one of their children was to divorce. This can lead to a child seeing half of their inheritance in the hands of an ex-partner and in the event of early bereavement this can lead to grandchildren being disinherited.Inheritance Tax – The current IHT framework can be complex and unknowingly people can leave their children and even grandchildren with an Inheritance tax issue.Probate – The cost of probate has risen dramatically over the last few years, and it can be a lengthy and drawn-out process. On average, with a valid Will, probate will typically take 6 – 12 months to complete, without a Will it may take up to 2 years. It’s Never the Wrong Time To Do The Right Thing – While people appreciate that inheritance planning is important many will delay seeking the correct advice. By putting o arranging our aairs we run the risk of running out of time, or in the event of illness, seeing our options dramatically reduced. Why Sanctuary Tax & Trust Services? With over 20 years of experience in Estate and Inheritance planning we have helped families in the area protect their assets and plan their inheritance in the most cost-eective way. While the individual family’s circumstance may vary, the one constant is that each family aims to provide the maximum amount of inheritance possible without the stress of complex legal jargon.
24Walton Gardens is one of those places which is always on my go to list when I suddenly draw a blank of where to take the girls. You dont need to pre plan a trip to Walton Gardens as its free but there is still plenty to do there. On a sunny day we normally head over for the girls to have a play on the playground, have a little wonder through the zoo, a walk around the pretty gardens and then sit and enjoy a picnic on the grass and buy an ice cream. The only things i have to spend money on is parking and the ice creams making it a really cheap day outWe love attending the events at Walton Gardens including the Cheshire Food Festival, music festivals during summer and their magical Christmas Lights by Luminate Children’s Zoo - The zoo includes animals such as goats, donkeys, pigs, & its fabulous peacocks, who casually walk along the paths with you displaying their feathers. Meet the three alpacas - Jim, Mally and Topaz. They even do events Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out Reviewswhere you can walk with an alpaca. The zoo is open daily, 10.30am - 5pmChildren’s Playground - Next to the zoo is the playground, featuring all kinds of equipment. There is plenty to play on for toddlers all the way up to 12 year olds. There is a large climbing frame with spiral tunnel slide, musical instuments, seesaws & it was great to see a wheelchair accessible roundabout. Gardens and Woodland - These are some really pretty gardens, especially in the height of summer. Walton Hall is a wedding venue to the gardens are used as a backdrop for wedding photos so are of course always kept very tidy and full of colour. The rhododendrons are particularly lovely at Walton Gardens If you want to add extra adventures to your day at a cost there’s adventure golf, pitch ‘n’ putt and bowls. It’s also home to Jungle Parc which a high ropes course with wobbly bridges, rocket zips, Tarzan swings and more.Adventure Golf & Pitch n Putt - The Adventure Golf course takes place on a purpose-built course and is suitable for all ages. It is 18 holes of fun and hand to eye coordination..The playing surface is on articial grass with each hole having an easy and a more challenging route to the cup, enabling the kids to compete with mum and dad! On your way round be sure to look out for thr themed wooden sculptures.Jungle Parc High Ropes - We have done the course at Jungle Parc last year. It is a great one for younger children as there is a low level course for them to get used to the harness and clip but still loads of fun with a rocket ship zip line. Food & drink - There’s lots places to enjoyed a picnic on a bench or bring along a picnic blanket for the open grass. Or you can grab some food from the Heritage Cafe, or an ice cream from the vans inside the park.Heritage Cafe at Walton Hall Gardens is a cute family run cafe in the Stables Courtyard serving breakfast, lunch, coees and cakes. In the Stables Courtyard there are also some little independent shops selling cute crafts and gifts. There is a really cute fairy shop my girls love and a jewellery one.Top Tips...• Free Entry, Parking between £3-£4 a day • Children’s Playground, Formal Walled Gardens, Wedding Venue, Alpaca Walks, Zoo Keeper Experiences, Crazy Golf & Pitch n Putt, High Rope Course, Picnic Areas, Heritage Cafe, Ice Cream Van• Children’s Zoo open 10.30- 5pm• Walton Lea Rd, Higher Walton, Warrington WA4 6SN• waltonhallgardens.co.ukYou can nd more reviews at daysoutandmealsout.com, Facebook page & Instagram, search ‘Days Out and Meals Out’

26Later this month, Sandbach Park (the main one in the centre of town, with the bowling greens, tennis courts, outdoor gym and, if social media is to be believed, all those pesky teenagers causing trouble) will once again play host to what is surely one of the highlights of the CW11 social calendar: Party in the Park. Not to be confused with the national event which, until 2005, took place in London’s Hyde Park, and over the years featured such global megastars as Lionel Richie, Bryan Adams, Meatloaf and Adam Rickett, our own event will be held on Saturday 13th July and promises to be fun for all the family.Boasting ‘Picnics, Pomp and Pleasure’ (I initially mis-typed this as ‘Picnics, Pump and Pleasure’, but that would be an entirely dierent type of social gathering – albeit one similarly enjoyed in parks) the gates will open at 5pm and revellers will be treated to a range of live music, Man About TownByGreg Hallbefore a spectacular ‘Silent Fireworks Finale’ at 10:15pm. Local dog owners can therefore rest easy.Sandbach School’s excellent Big Band will be playing ‘easy listening favourites’ from 6:30pm (although, Adam Rickett fans are going to be left doubly disappointed, as I’m reliably informed his impressive back catalogue won’t feature at all – not even 1999’s seminal ‘I Breathe Again’).Then, at 8:30pm, Foden’s will take to the stage to put their spin on some musical theatre classics. We can only hope this is Sandbach’s highly acclaimed brass band and not, due to an embarrassing oversight by the promoters, Manchester City’s Phil Foden (plus family) doing drunken karaoke. Besides being an appalling singer by all accounts, his nation might very well need him for the Euro 2024 nal the following evening. If you are planning to attend Party in the Park, it’s worth emphasising that the Town Council have conrmed there won’t be a bar, so you should ‘BYO’ (which, for anyone unaccustomed to acronyms, stands for ‘Bring Your Own’). I assume this means to bring your own alcohol, rather than your own bar.The Council have also stressed that “no re or BBQ’s” (which, if you really struggle with acronyms, stands for ‘barbecues’) will be permitted, as well as “No Gazebo’s”. Unnecessary apostrophes are, however, entirely welcome it seems. And, speaking of typos, the website goes on to explain that “entry is strictly via waistband which can be purchased in advance or, where available, on the gate.” I can only hope they meant to say “wristband” because, if entry is indeed based on one’s midri, I’ve not been running in a while, and I’m worried I might require a family ticket all to myself.

30Anyone driving in and out of Sandbach these days, especially on the A533, surely notices frequent roadworks. A modern nuisance? Well, no. Road improvement concerns have been urgent for centuries. Let’s nd out more about this, how Sandbach fared - and whether clues remain today.By the 1600’s, damaged and rutted roads had become dicult for horses, wheels and cargoes alike. Yet carriageways often got left un-mended. Regionally important routes – and the increasing trac they carried - were simply too much for each parish on its own to maintain. The solution? Creation of the turnpike system. A ‘turnpike’ was exactly that: an actual, spiky barrier Sandbach’s HeritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth Smalleyacross the road preventing passage until a toll had been paid. Funds raised therefore were the means to repair those treacherous surfaces. Sharpened pikes placed in your way would be a good incentive to do the right thing and pay up! Usually these moveable gates were placed at crossroads, forks or bridges. However, like most new things, the ‘user pays’ principle was rejected at rst as a terrible ‘tax upon all passengers’. Trusts to manage the new procedure were set up, empowered by Acts of Parliament. Their brief included both collection of tolls from vehicles and responsibility to maintain in reasonable condition the more major roads. At the height of the scheme these toll gates, and smaller side bars, numbered an incredible 8000 nearly. Still, most roads and local lanes remained parish responsibility – and it didn’t cost to use them. So when did Sandbach join Cheshire’s expanding network? The road between Sandbach and Middlewich (now A533) was turnpiked in 1788. A tollbar was located on the Middlewich Road at Warmingham Lane junction. Also, two toll gates were set up on the other side of Sandbach at Betchton on Capper’s Lane (by Love Lane) and a little further down at Chelshill. The scheme nationally lasted two hundred years from the1660’s to the 1860’s. Toll Gates (TG) are indicated on maps of the period, or sometimes TB for toll bar. It can be quite surprising to discover familiar spots - nowadays ‘free-passage’- once had barriers installed to extract money. Today’s ‘hidden’ heritage retains occasional references. It’s fun to recognise these and realise just that little bit more about our past landscapes… Pubs called The Turnpike, former collectors’ dwellings near to strategic routes, possibly called Toll Cottage, and of course on Middlewich Road – ‘Turnpike Court’. All these ‘signposts’ recall and help us imagine the transport of the past. Having said that, there really seems no end to essential roadworks!
