Suce to say, the last time I had been for a run prior to that was at a point in my life when I could still get out of a chair without creaking.I am what you might call a reluctant runner. I think running is dull, painful, and should only be resorted to when late for a train or being pursued by zombies. Nevertheless, my return was prompted by two realisations: my mid-life spread was no longer ‘low fat’, and I wasn’t prepared to give up biscuits. So, since my commitment to snacking was resolute, changes were required if I was to avoid turning into ‘Jabba the Greg’ by my forties.Having hauled myself around a mile-long circuit in town for a few months, I slowly built the distance up and eventually entered my rst ever ‘parkrun’ at Astbury Mere the following summer. And, whereas some folks complete their inaugural parkrun, love it, and can’t wait to return, I’ve now completed 55 of them Man About TownByGreg Halland still maintain running is horrible. I only do it for the extra calories I can sco afterwards. However, while my contempt for running has never wavered, I will admit to developing a fondness for sprint nishes, because not only does that nal burst mean the ordeal is almost over, but I’m also highly competitive and enjoy overtaking others just before the line.It was that competitive streak, combined with improving tness, which ultimately led to me entering the Sandbach 10k in 2017. Why I thought 10k would be anything other than twice as gruelling as a 5k parkrun remains a mystery but, this time, I not only received vociferous encouragement from the spectators lining the nish straight, but also a shiny medal and loaf of bread for my eorts (the race was sponsored by a local bakery, although bread is the last thing you want after running six miles). The thrill of crossing the line, combined with the medal, was just enough incentive for me to re-enter in 2018 and 2019, and it didn’t get any easier (even though my times improved). As a tip for non-runners, race organisers are like estate agents, so ‘picturesque countryside’ usually means ‘muddy with potholes’ and ‘undulating course’ translates to ‘bloody steep in parts.’Still, the Sandbach 10k is one of the best in the North, the route is safe and mostly at, and if you’re lucky you might just get a loaf of bread at the end. This year’s event takes place on Sunday 11th August (so any budding participants have probably missed out by the time you read this, but there’s always next year) and, as a very reluctant runner, I’ll admit it’s worth doing at least once.

Apparently not. With a tiny population of just over four and a half thousand, perhaps not much to-and-fro could be expected. Yet it appears there are links galore with places and people. Let’s see just how hooked up this town really was 175 years ago. Some of these worthy individuals may even be in your family tree… Pubs being traditional meeting places, principal inns in 1857 were the George and the Wheatsheaf – each still trading today. On the High Street the George Hotel and Posting House (where horses were available) was run by Ralph Arden. Thomas Colclough had the Red Lion Inn and Posting House. From both, omnibuses would ‘meet the dierent trains on the London & North Western Railway’. Conveyances were varied. Besides buses and trains, there was water transport courtesy of the ‘Grand Trunk or Trent & Mersey Canal’ (original and new Sandbach’s HeritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth Smalleynames used together). George Rhodes was agent. From the Swan & Chequers on the High Street carriers to Congleton were available every Tuesday and Saturday, with services also to Middlewich, Wheelock and Nantwich. Turnpikes famously improved ‘intercity’ route-ways - for a fee. Toll collector at Holly Stile gate was Abraham Booth.Handling his share of connections, Thomas Proudman’s position was no doubt busy and responsible. Based in the Market Place (now the Cobbles), he was ‘Receiver’ i.e. postmaster. Letters would arrive in Sandbach ‘from all parts of the kingdom’ at a precise 2:30 am daily, with a second delivery at a quarter to three in the afternoon. At midday, letters were despatched to Crewe, the Staordshire Potteries, Manchester, North of England and North Wales. For any other destinations the collection was 10:45pm. An impressive timetable! Customers had the convenience of posting up until ve minutes before despatch for the morning service, but the box would close 30 minutes beforehand in the evening. Not only that, money orders were dealt with between the hours of 9 and 6 each day, with an extension until 8pm Saturday evenings. Curiously, Mr Proudman doubled as local agent for the Christian Knowledge Depot. For health and leisure, and most likely enjoyable gossip, bathing facilities were provided in aptly-named Bath Street (proprietor John Brockhouse). These consisted of hot, cold, shower and plunge – the latter ‘of such a size as to allow of swimming.’ Nice! And of course, should public news need to be broadcast on the street, Town Crier George Lea of Scotch Common was the man to announce it. Victorian Sandbach 1857… in touch with the world!

Bespoke By Baskerville was established over ten years ago by Fenella Baskerville who still heads up our team which is 100% UK based with the vast majority of items manufactured in Bond Street and Hatton Garden, London. This ensures the absolute highest quality in all pieces, not just the stones, but the metals and workmanship are all as good as you can get. The company designs for private clients and also works designing for renowned high street jewellery stores as well as many well-known celebrities who of course benet from our condentiality.Fenella has worked in the British and International jewellery trade for nearly 35 years. She has experience from design to workshop manufacturing, to production management, to customer facing roles, essentially the entire jewellery industry in its component parts.Fenella still heads up the operation today and is the sole designer, she now lives and works running the company from her base in Cheshire where the inspirational forces are more natural and the working environment more conducive to designing amazing jewellery rather than spending time in the city.About FenellaFenella has always been creative and has always loved jewellery. At just 4 years old she started spending time in her granddads hearing aid workshop where he taught her to ‘play’ with coloured Perspex and she began making jewellery. As she grew up her designs became more intricate and started using dierent materials. Fast forwards and Fenella went on to study 3D design at Manchester Met University before moving to London and starting her own workshop. It was when Fenella moved to London she realised a gap in the market for wedding tiaras. She excelled in this eld and even won a Je Banks Bridal Award. At the same time Fenella started working with the privately owned and the international jewellers of Bond Street but always maintaining her own design and manufacturing workshop. She would leave work at 5pm and cycle to her own workshop where she would work until the small hours on her private client business, often falling asleep at the bench. Fenella simply lived and loved jewellery.Whilst working in Bond Street and running her own private business Fenella also somehow made the time to gain her DGA and FGA certications meaning she is a certied diamond and gems stone grader. In 1995 Fenella moved to New York where her business continued to boom. An English Girl in New York, making English designed jewellery allowed her to establish her name on an international level. The American rappers and NY high society love for Fenella’s jewellery helped her become internationally renowned as one of the nest jewellery designers of her time.Having moved back to the UK Fenella left the London jewellery scene to return to Cheshire where she started a family but as always, she kept her love for designing bespoke jewellery alive, this time by designing for well known high street jewellers stores across the UK as well as establishing a growing well respected high end client baseTo this day Fenella will be found at the computer designing on CAD or, at the bench seeing if a new idea actually works in construction reality. Her passion for making the very best jewellery possible has never waned and her inspiration continues unabated. As for the client base who make the business what it is, it’s everyone who wears a Bespoke By Baskerville piece of jewellery. Without fail, we know every customer personally, and know they are always proud to show their jewellery from us, designed and made with true passion, true love and true care, here in the UK.ADORN YOURSELF WITH BESPOKE TREASURES AS DISTINCT AS YOU ARE.Here at bespoke by Baskerville, I blend time-honoured artistry with modern creativity, meticulously crafting exquisite pieces that reflect the individuality and stories of each client. 28An election has come and gone with a new government in place. With it, comes the age-old question – What can it do for me?The truth is, right now, not a whole lot. Change takes time and those particularly high interest rates are likely to stay for just a little while longer. However, that isn’t to say that relief for small businesses isn’t going to happen. After all, new governments are quite keen on putting its stamp on things. Its rst move which has slipped under the radar, has been to introduce the Growth Guarantee Scheme which will see lenders support access to nance for small businesses over the next two years. It will eventually help 11,000 businesses access potentially thousands. It is designed to support sustainable growth rather than immediate cash injections, which for small businesses is a much better way of modelling where to put its capital. Bound by red tape? It’s time to break free…ByRich WilcockThis new scheme however is a drop in the ocean to what some companies need to grow. In fact, a third of small businesses would like better access to nance according to a new study and just under half of those asked in the study would like to see a drastic reduction in red tape. There is absolutely no denying that red tape is a huge burden on small businesses. I often think I’m avoiding it, by opting for simplicity (I know I’m not the only one) before realising that I’m being dragged down and held in place by bundles and bundles of red tape. It’s also hard to understand. As small business owners or freelancers, we do not have time to really digest what it means, nor the money to pay somebody to nd out. And in truth, its because much of the red tape that binds us to rules, lack simple common sense. But it aects how we operate for sure. Fire safety, discrimination, health and safety, risk aversion and monetary handling are common areas where red tape aects us, and we should all have a decent grasp of what is needed to comply in those areas. The truth is though, many don’t.Trade Associations are a good start to understand which side of the law you stand. Many are a key source of support for small rms, and help assist with limitations that companies face, especially with small businesses. And whilst they are not necessarily legal experts, they do prove invaluable at helping with rules and regulations.Sometimes it is a mindset. Patience with rules and regulations can help somebody understand them quicker or in a simpler context if they give themselves just a moment to think about it. Treating the rules as unwelcome, unnecessary or even meddlesome can set somebody up to fail. In a broader sense, red tape is less an unnecessary evil and more a friendly reminder of the world we operate in. Treating it as such can certainly help and not hinder your business.

WILL WRITING • WILL TRUSTS • ASSETS TRUSTPOWER OF ATTORNEY • INHERITANCE TAX PLANNINGTelephone 01270 667 912 or visit www.sanctuarytts.comSanctuary Tax & Trust Services Ltd, 41 Lawton Road, Alsager ST7 2AAAs the cost-of-living spirals and more of our children struggle to get a footing on the property ladder it is now more important than ever to plan our family’s inheritance. The team at Sanctuary Tax & Trust explain how many families nd themselves victims of avoidable losses and why simply writing a will does not guarantee our family will inherit as we wish. For the vast majority of people, we spend all our lives working to build up wealth, through property, savings and pensions we look at providing nancial security for our families and when our nal day arrives, we hope these assets will pass to the people we care about the most, partners, children, relatives and friends. Traditionally, people have chosen wills to document their wishes and while writing a will is important, it does not provide any protection for the assets within it.Considerations when planning InheritanceCare Fees – As we live longer the likelihood of needing care becomes greater and under the government’s changes to the social care act should the need for care arise, we could see our asset taken down to just £14,250. The new assessment process will see everybody with property and savings over a combined value of £23,250 being required to pay for their care.Relationship Failure – When passing assets purely through a will we see many leaving their assets to their children but not giving consideration to what would happen if one of their children was to divorce. This can lead to a child seeing half of their inheritance in the hands of an ex-partner and in the event of early bereavement this can lead to grandchildren being disinherited.Inheritance Tax – The current IHT framework can be complex and unknowingly people can leave their children and even grandchildren with an Inheritance tax issue.Probate – The cost of probate has risen dramatically over the last few years, and it can be a lengthy and drawn-out process. On average, with a valid Will, probate will typically take 6 – 12 months to complete, without a Will it may take up to 2 years. It’s Never the Wrong Time To Do The Right Thing – While people appreciate that inheritance planning is important many will delay seeking the correct advice. By putting o arranging our aairs we run the risk of running out of time, or in the event of illness, seeing our options dramatically reduced. Why Sanctuary Tax & Trust Services? With over 20 years of experience in Estate and Inheritance planning we have helped families in the area protect their assets and plan their inheritance in the most cost-eective way. While the individual family’s circumstance may vary, the one constant is that each family aims to provide the maximum amount of inheritance possible without the stress of complex legal jargon.

34had one daughter and was informed that her chances of conceiving after chemotherapy were only 1%. However, in 2017, following some health concerns, she was asked to undergo a CT scan. Before the scan, she took a pregnancy test, which revealed astonishing news: Sarah was pregnant with her son, Monty. This miraculous event was followed by the birth of her daughter, Poppie. During her breast cancer journey, Sarah met many individuals who provided immense inspiration and support. She always cherished the idea of recognising these remarkable people for their often unnoticed contributions. Having seen awards for business and sport, she realised there was nothing similar for those in the breast cancer community. This dream of honouring those unsung heroes led her to create the Buttery Breast Cancer Awards.Of course, this vision didn’t materialise overnight. Sarah meticulously developed her concept from the ground up, beginning with the name “The Buttery Awards.” She explains, “A buttery is delicate but has the strength and resilience to break through its chrysalis after being in darkness for a period of time, never giving up hope and believing it can emerge as a beautiful buttery in a new world.”On September 20th, 2024, the 2nd Buttery Breast Cancer Awards will be held at Vale Royal Abbey. I had the privilege of speaking with the inspiring Sarah Pickles, the visionary behind this remarkable event, to learn about her journey and the motivation for launching the ceremony in 2023.Sarah’s story is one of resilience and hope. In 2014, she was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer, embarking on a challenging treatment journey that included chemotherapy and a double mastectomy with reconstruction. At the time, she already Katy meets... Buttery Breast Cancer Awardsby Katy O’ReganThe buttery theme permeates the entire event, from the branding to the gift each winner receives: a beautiful living buttery ready to be released into their own gardens when they get home. The awards at the event have all been carefully considered. From women who are bravely navigating their own cancer journeys to those supporting others with breast cancer, Sarah has witnessed strength, hope, and connection on an extraordinary level.Sarah wanted to acknowledge the women who ourished, emerging with a renewed sense of purpose and achievement, harnessing the opportunity to transcend from their old selves and create new beginnings. Women who, despite their own challenges, support others through treatment, nding ways to help them shine or creating products, services, and businesses to make the experience easier for other breast cancer women.Sarah also recognises the many others playing vital roles in making a dierence to someone with breast cancer and their long road to wellbeing. From nurses, doctors, and support sta to neighbours, friends, and family, there is often an army of people lifting you up through little acts of kindness. She also has awards for those who provide a listening ear, a reassuring hug or note, giggles and tears over a cup of tea, a meal for the family on treatment day, help with the school run when you have an appointment, a baked cake left on the doorstep for the disturbed nights ahead, a fundraiser in your name—the list is endless. All are worthy of recognition, yet often go unnoticed by everyone else.A full list of the awards and how to nominate are on her website. You can also book tickets for the event or, if you are a business, perhaps sponsor something on the night.Sarah is also an accomplished author. She wrote a book about her own journey with the aim to help others going through the same. Sarah remembers how she had to learn quickly when she was diagnosed and hopes her experience will make it a little easier for someone in the same situation. Her book, The Shock Factor: Sarah’s Story - Beating Breast Cancer One Day at a Time, is also available to order on her website. The Buttery Awards are going to be a night of fun, entertainment, lovely food, Celebration, Recognition and inspiring stories, plus an opportunity to raise money for some vital breast cancer charities. The 2024 chosen charity is Prevent Breast Cancer, and they hope to beat the amount they raised last year, which was a huge £7,513.88. Sarah is a very busy lady. Not only does she have three children to look after, she also works most days at Celeste, a coee and cocktail bar in Holmes Chapel and she has recently set up her own breast cancer charity called ‘Beating Breast Cancer with Success’. Plus, she won’t rest after this year’s awards because next year’s event looks like it will be even bigger as she already has the venue booked: Chester Racecourse!I wish her all the best for The Buttery Awards 2024. I am sure the event will be a success and get bigger each year. For tickets, award nominations, or to nd out how to be a sponsor or donate an auction prize, go to sarahepickles.uk.
